2000 Chevrolet Tahoe LS review from North America
"Terrific car, just wish GM would make it get 30+mpg as a diesel"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
* Firewall gasket around A/C was missing from factory, $750 for dealer to replace to prevent air blowing in from engine compartment into passenger foot well. Air began blowing in 2yrs after repair, persists to date.
* Oil change every 3k miles.
* 30, 60, and 90k mile services by dealer. 90k service with brakes, rotors, suspension, oil, tires, etc cost nearly $2500
* New tires at 40k miles, again at 105k (Michelin LTX, highly recommend).
* Brake pads and rotors ($1200+) only needed to be changed once at 105k miles.
* Rear seat belts have a tendency to catch if flip forward and store flat used - required dealer to release seat belts once as they got caught in latch ($30 fee).
* Dash A/C light and Radio lights are starting to burn out (2007-2008) - have not priced out how much it will be to replace as A/C and radio work fine. Buttons just can't be seen at night.
*Battery replaced in 2003, 2005, & 2007. Does NOT fair well in winters.
General comments?
This car was bought new in San Diego, California, from C&M Chevrolet. It was the first new body style Tahoe they got in stock. It was been driven cross country multiple times and I have lived in several different locations with it including New Orleans, and now in Washington, DC. Serviced by Chevrolet dealers only. Has cost VERY little to maintain, and is still giving me 17-18mpg at 115,000 miles.
Bone stock except wind deflectors, running boards, and tinted front windows (great on long road trips).
I spend 50/50 freeway/highway miles on this guy. Have towed with it using the optional tow package I bought when I bought the truck. Carried the family all over. And it still runs terrifically.
Wish I had the 4x4 for winters in the Northeast.
Replaced a Jeep Wrangler with this truck, and will probably trade it in within the next 12months for a VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI Diesel (40-48mpg) before any transmission/drivetrain problems can pop up.
