1991 Chrysler Imperial 3.3 liter from North America

Summary:

Worst ABS brake system ever made!

Faults:

The power brake system had a recall in 2004. The car was taken to the dealer for the recall service. Was told it needed some other brake problems, that should be fixed. Ended up paying nearly $700. Brakes never did work very well. In 2005 the power brake electric booster motor started to run every time the brakes were touched. Brakes were very soft. But the brake pedal would pump up. Found out that the brake master cylinder was bad. Was given a price of about $30 for the brake master cylinder at several local parts stores. But they did not match the one on the car at all. Contacted the dealer and was told that the brake master cylinder would be $1200 and they were on back order. The only parts of the brake master cylinder that were bad were a few O-rings worth about $10. But the O-rings were not available from the dealer or from any other sources that I tried.

So the only fix was to pay the $1200 just to get the $10 worth of actual bad parts. The regional office refused to help with the cost at all. Even though this brake system has been known to be bad since shortly after this model was sold.

General Comments:

Has a nice ride, very smooth.

Power everything.

Had no problems with 3.3 Liter engine or transmission.

Did have problems with the factory alarm going off for no reason. And sometimes the power trunk would just pop open.

You had a Taurus and you were complaining about this car? I can't see how, as this is a far superior car in every way. The ABS system used on these cars has a secret hidden warranty for lifetime. Found this online.

Late reply. The Bendix 10 brake system recall is life time with no regard to owner and it also pays the owner for repairs owner paid for. It is enforced by the FTC because it is a warranty not a recall. I got $1700 back. Go get your $$$$.

Fantastic luxury automobile!

Faults:

Upper and lower radiator hoses.

Great car!

Exceptionally quiet ride.

People don't know what it is when you drive by because it only indicates that it is an Imperial and not a Chrysler.

They become confused when forced to pick out which of the 1,000 K-car derivatives it is.

15th Jan 2017, 13:41

Actually, the Imperial which returned for the 1981 (not 1980) model year was based on the J-body RWD platform. The K-car derivative version came along about 10 years later.

Neither one would elicit much interest from passers-by, then or now.

1990 Chrysler Imperial 3.3L V6 from North America

Summary:

A wonderful car for many years to come

Faults:

The rear air suspension in the car is out; the cause is the compressor. Easy enough to replace, but I manually pump it now. The driver's window motor has been replaced, as well.

General Comments:

This is a wonderful car to drive. Aside from it's wide turning radius, it's perfect. It has all the modern comforts, such as power everything, plenty of space, and a good sound system.
