1987 Citroen CX 25 RD 2.5 turbo diesel from Germany

Summary:

If you can persuade it to run, it's an orgasm on wheels

Faults:

This car has been so thoroughly and totally defective throughout the short ownership experience that it would be easier to list what actually worked.

In short, the electrical system, cooling system, and even the suspension gave me constant trouble.

I replaced parts worth about US$ 6.000 within one year, then finally resigned and sold it to an enthusiast who later refused to pay on the grounds of the car being utterly unusable.

General Comments:

The CX Turbo Diesel is tremendous fun to drive.

The combination of relentless turbo thrust and hydro pneumatic suspension magic is intoxicating.

Road holding, steering, and comfort are way ahead of their time for a car designed in the early 70s.

The seats are dramatically soft and take getting used to.

The clutch is heavy.

The brakes are fantastic once you get used to them.

Being seen with one feels good.

Summary:

Big, comfortable and fast car for a young man

Faults:

Rear suspension unit leak.

Alternator seized without warning.

New battery was bought to make the electric system work perfectly.

Oil pressure sensor failed.

General Comments:

You don't see one of these very often in Finland and I get much admiration from fellow motorists.

Rather expensive to maintain and has rust in the door bottoms and around the sunroof.

Manual gearbox is awkward and I'm considering to install air conditioning.

1987 Citroen CX CX25 GTi Turbo 2 2.5 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance luxury classic cruiser

Faults:

Air con losing gas.

Numerous under bonnet electrical connection failures.

Wiper motor.

Hydraulic pipe split.

Boiled over due to fan not operating, caused by you guessed it ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.

Also rusty electric sunroof a problem and look after the tyres (don't wheel spin them), not cheap at £150 each.

General Comments:

Extremely comfortable 140 mph cruiser, a bit expensive to run and electrical problems are a pain in the posterior. Otherwise mechanically excellent, a very cheap high performance cruiser that will see off most new cars and if treated and well looked after, will go on for years.
