1993 Citroen XM Comfort 2.oi from Netherlands

Summary:

Best ride ever

Faults:

The (suspension) spheres were in a poor condition when I bought the car.

The cat was in a poor condition when I bought the car.

The dashboard lights were in a poor condition when I bought the car.

General Comments:

When the suspension is in good condition there is no better ride. Some additional power would be fine, specially when you visit Germany now and then, 190 km/h seems low compared to the competition. The bodywork is great, I will never have to fear rust from appearing. The costs after purchasing were high, but I had anticipated this. The cost of purchasing were low so this compensates. If possible try to find a good service station, that is NOT always the Cit dealer.

1993 Citroen XM Si 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Oil leaks.

Wiring looms needed replacing.

New spheres required.

Remote keyfob failed.

Electric window failed.

Faulty display messages.

General Comments:

A superb car spoiled by niggling faults which are very expensive to put right.

One of the very best for space, comfort and long-journey motorway driving.

Spare part prices are unrealistically high if bought through the normal channels.

1993 Citroen XM SED 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Luxury at an affordable price

Faults:

Heater matrix sprung a leak at 171,000 miles.

Head gasket blew at 174,000 miles.

General Comments:

For a diesel, this car is extremely quiet when sitting in the cabin.

The economy is excellent 30-35 urban, 50-55 motorway at a steady 60MPH.

Very comfortable especially on long distant journeys.

This model has so many toys to stop you getting bored on long journeys.

1993 Citroen XM Tecnique 2.0 CT from Germany

Summary:

Very cool, but high running costs

Faults:

An ABS sensor is faulty.

The air conditioning is leaking: the gas contains CFCs, can't be refilled in Germany.

A coolant hose is leaking.

General Comments:

This car is really as comfortable as its reputation. And it's design is outstanding. Everywhere you look it has a special intelligent twist to it that's beautiful, handy and comfortable at the same time.

Somehow it seems the electric sensors everywhere cause more problems by themselves than they actually help avoid, and the flashing lights don't create a sense of reliability even though everything seems to run fine.

The fuel efficiency of this engine (2.0 turbo) is not too good either: 8-9 l / 100 km of Super (91) gas. (28 Miles/Gallon) in mixed traffic. It's much worse if you go chasing BMWs in the left lane, which you could.

1993 Citroen XM Turbo SED 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A remarkable, economical, long-legged tourer

Faults:

The gearbox shed a main shaft cluster retaining bolt. Expensive to repair.

Air-conditioning leak. New drier needed. Not too expensive.

Rear LHS electric window pull down cable snapped. Not yet repaired.

Front LHS hydraulic return pipe perished. Simple to repair with some new pipe.

General Comments:

The car is remarkably economical for it's size, returning 30 (ish) mpg around town and 50-55 mpg on a long journey if taken at a gentle pace.

The ride is fabulous, when the suspension is well serviced.

The interior is very well appointed. Electric everything, AC, leather and even an electric arm rest.

Very comfortable and relaxed on a long journey.

The handling, when pushed, is very good for a car of it's size. It belies the low speed plushness.

1993 Citroen XM 2.1 SED Estate 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A bargain, but get a FSH

Faults:

Front discs replaced at 66k and 112k.

All spheres at around 100k.

Front strut saddles at 112k - this is a design fault - water sits and saddles rust.

Nothing serious - just wear and tear now.

General Comments:

Superb comfort, carrying capacity & economy. However, you need a friendly Citroen mechanic - not at main dealer rates!

1993 Citroen XM SD 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A superb car when sorted

Faults:

Drive shaft within 10 miles of buying the car.

Clutch within 3000 miles.

All suspension spheres within 3000 miles.

Various bulbs.

Exhaust within 3000 miles.

Various switches.

General Comments:

Bought from a Citroen XM specialist with a full service and 12 months warranty, all repair work carried out.

In reality no repairs done, warranty not worth the paper it was written on, cost over a £1000 to put it in good order in the first 6 months, since then a superb car, handles as if on rails, luxury on wheels, sit back and enjoy the ride. Perfect long distance transport and economical over 45 mpg.
