2002 Citroen Xsara HDI 2.0 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Fast, cheap and reliable

Faults:

Passenger window not working. Haven't fixed it yet as quote is $1000.

Replaced stereo because CD player stopped working.

Clutch starting to feel stiff.

Nothing else.

General Comments:

A great car, attractive, fast, handles extremely well, economy is great on long trips - I get about 700km to a tank.

I have had no major problems with the car, only annoying thing is the passenger power window not working.

Exterior of the car looks great, I have it in Burgundy. Interior of the car is not so great in my opinion. The rest of the car feels so solid and things inside feel loose, one air conditioning vent has broken and general wear and tear has taken its toll on appearance. Still it all works OK, but could be better.

Performance is bloody good, the turbo is impressive, and even better in manual. As it is a diesel it can struggle in acceleration higher that 115km/h, but still gets up and goes. Sometimes with a full load it would get very hot and lose all power, although it would still maintain speed this was very annoying.

Citroen were great at looking after us, but every time there was a service they would find something that probably wasn't broken and charge us $2000. We take it to a standard mechanic from now on.

Highly recommended, a car that stands out (cause hardly anyone here has Citroen's).

2002 Citroen Xsara SX 2.0 HDI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good motorway cruiser, reliable, but a few annoying bills

Faults:

Front wheel bearings, disks and pads replaced at 44000 miles.

Wiper motor and gearing replaced at 62000 miles after tooth on gear sheered off causing wipers to stop during wiping arc.

Front passenger electric window motor and runners replaced at 78000 miles because of a broken plastic clip.

General Comments:

Other than the mentioned faults the car has been very reliable, never failing to start and covers 500 miles a week with ease, the engine and running gear appear bullet proof.

The car is used mainly for motorway driving, power during acceleration is very rapid, making overtaking almost effortless. Driven sensibly 60mpg is achievable and 48mpg is lowest I have had, but this was during constant 90mph+ driving and fully laden on a French holiday.

The interior shows no signs of wear, with comfortable seats, no rattles and good sound insulation.

2002 Citroen Xsara LX 1.6 16v 110 BHP from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fandabbydosie

Faults:

The only problem I have encountered so far, was the fact that the electric passenger door mirror adjuster came off in my hand when I touched it.

As I was still on the forecourt this was replaced with a new switch direct from the stores office.

Other than that nothing major as yet.

General Comments:

From the moment I sat behind the wheel of this car I loved it. Even though it is a lowly LX it doesn't have black door handles or black bumpers (which is important I'm told). Instead it has air conditioning, front electric windows, very comfortable seats, wonderful driving position, cavernous boot and most other things you wouldn't expect to find on an LX model car. It also has a very responsive 1600cc engine, which is very very quiet at speed.

I must point out though that the previous owner of the car was a gentleman of many years who loved and cared for the car and this reflects that fact in the service history. e.g. Havoline fuel system treatment every six months.

So this review may not apply to all examples of new/used Citroen Xsara's out there.

In summary: If you need a lot of car for little money I would recommend a Citroen Xsara to anybody and at a snap of £3495 which I payed, I am more than pleased with my new toy.

I agree 100%, buying these second hand is a bargain. Ultra low price which does not reflect the quality of these cars. Only downside is somewhat high maintenance cost and parts costs, but these cars does not have to be repaired that often at least the two that I had was very reliable. Had them as company cars some years back and will now buy one used as a second (private) car.
