I have a 1979 280zx, produced 3/79, and it has power steering. 79-81 you could get power steering, but it was NOT rack and pinion, it was a recirculating ball steering rack. It wasn't until the middle of 81 when Datsun started making power assisted rack and pinion.

My 79 280ZX coupe had rack and pinion. It was really stiff when trying to turn from a still position, but once it hit the open road it really hugged the turns with the rack and pinion. When I get another one, it will have rack and pinion. I only drove it for about a year and a half and I wish I had it back.

With the best will in the world guys, you either got; a 'Power Assisted Recirculating Ball Steering Box' fitted, or a 'Power Assisted Steering Rack' fitted! Power Steering is just what it says it is... fully powered and not an assisted manually governed method, a bit like many fork-lift trucks have in warehouses. Strangely, it's pretty important to get nomenclature correct if you're going to successfully communicate with your fellow human beings and be acurately understood! As a vehicle designer and developer, I got a fairly good idea what everyone was going on about, but I'm guessing that not every reader has my experience to fall back on... ho hum, on we go :)

I had a 1979 ZX and the base model had rack and pinion steering without power assist! I believe most of the four seaters had power steering and velor interiors.

Have two 1979 280zx. One coupe - 4 seater and one 2-seater. The 4 seater has power steering, power windows, the whole nine yards and 395,000 miles. The little 2 seater has original 39,000 miles and original tires still. Would like to put power steering and windows in the 2 seater. Any ideas folks?

Just bought a 1979 280ZX made in 7/79. There is no power steering. The car is all stock and in show room shape. It has 97,000 real miles on it and runs great. It will be in the car show this August 2009. Cruise by the Bay Car Show. Hope to win!!!

My 79 has power steering stock, all 4 disks. Back left disk is cracked though. Other than that she runs like a dream.

I bought a white 82 brand new. These cars had class and got many compliments in their day. The white with dark glass T Tops were very sharp. In 82 there were few good looking imports except for European offerings. These cars were a bit cheap new, and also insurance was high. The weak point was the A/C. They came very well optioned and had some advanced vehicle readouts for the driver. Performance was lackluster, but it was a great steady handling car. I had the 2 plus 2 with a small rear seat for my young ones. I sold mine and went through a succession of Corvettes and an SL.

Yes. You are correct, my 79 280ZX is power assisted rack and pinion.
