1983 Datsun 280ZX from North America - Comments

"I've got my Z, don't need anything else"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The car was parked in a muddy driveway for about 7 years and sank a good deal into the mud, took a new computer to get it started.

Computer had to be replaced ($200)

Alternator is bad, battery constantly dies.

Constant misfires.

Wheel alignment is screwy and tires needs balanced.

Some minor leaks around the T tops.

Can you say rust?

Most of that's fixed now though, didn't cost very much as I got a bunch of friends to help me.

General comments?

I bought this car and a parts car with a turbo for 600 dollars. Now, about 7000 miles later, this car hasn't let me down once.

Absolutely incredible. All the electrical system was working just fine after 20+ years. This car has gotten looks, nods, and a few challenging ricers that got too scared to step up into the 100+MPH range.

Can't go wrong with guys telling you that they wish they had one and girls telling you what a big front end it has.

The people that complained that this car isn't "fast" should think again, and moreover, this car should be restored and owned more for what it is, a Datsun, the car that started the import industry. Enough said.

I've also got a 1000 dollar Trans Am (305 v8) and modded the hell out of it, and that is my "fast" car. Because butchering the original engine to trade for a 350 is just inhumane.

All the features from computer voice to racing style gauges to dead on handling makes this car truly a timeless machinery ahead of it's time.

Truly a college student's dream come true. I've got my Z, don't need anything else.

You are happy with a 1983?! That's an antique by today's

standards!

You bought a car that was sunk in mud for seven years?

Why?

83 may seem old, but I've got an 82 with nearly 200,000 miles and it runs like a champ. You're right that it is an antique, but the thing is, these things have a reputation to run forever and they are an awesome deal for the money if you can find a good one. Mine basically found me instead of the other way around. One day it was just sitting outside my parent's office and two days later it was mine.

I keep reading that the 82 280ZX is slow and was a disgrace. I am here to tell you that she is the best car I have ever been in. My 82ZX is my baby. She is old, but she can hang with some of the best out there on the road. I fell in love with this car when my dad had the turbo version with the t-tops. Now I have mine, long live the Z.

I have always wanted a 280ZX from the time they were new. Finely got a 1980 ZX in 2002..350,000 miles, loose suspension, 17 mpg, used no oil and a re-builder title. Loved it. Sold it.

Just bought a 1983 ZX with only 75,500 miles, tight, new upholstery, carpets, paint... looks like a new car.

They are fun, fast, quick...all you could ask for.

I just bought a 1983 280ZX off my boss for about 400 bucks. Which was a steal.

It has all the options digital gages, t tops, turbo, five speed, leather seats and it's all in great shape. There's a couple of rust spots, but not noticeable.

This car sat for about 9 years and I slapped a new battery on, and to my surprised all the electrical gages, lights, everything worked.

The only problem is that it needs a starter, 70 bucks new. Damn good car for the money; I love it!!!

I paid $8200 for my 1982 280ZX 2 plus 2 and felt it was a steal back in 1987 with just 40,000 miles... mint white no rust body with red interior and dark glass tops. Had a lot of nice compliments. It cost more to insure than my Vette, however I needed a back seat for the kids, so the 2 plus 2 fit the bill. Good luck.

I bought an 83 280zx for 300 bucks, and the only thing wrong with it is the hood, but besides that, the car is running good and the best thing is EVERY THING WORKS.
