1998 Dodge Avenger ES 2.5 liter 24 valve from North America

Summary:

A very attractive and affordable sports car

Faults:

The front drivers side rim was bent causing the tire to lose pressure constantly, but the dealer took care of it and replaced it.

The paint on the rear spoiler is faded slightly.

I changed all 4 tires, which didn't bother me, I knew it was coming. However it did bother me when I found out the tires cost nearly $200 each. They are a low profile tire, which is why they are so expensive.

General Comments:

This is a very good looking and fast car, you won't be disappointed.

The 2.5 liter 24 valve engine is right on the money, it provides plenty of power and helps me outrun most any car I pass.

The transmission shifts beautifully.

The steering is nice and tight, very useful for freeway driving.

The car handles like a dream, especially at high speeds around turns which impressed me.

1998 Dodge Avenger 2.5 from North America

Summary:

Looks good, but high maintenance

Faults:

My head gasket blew at 77,000 miles.

Exterior lock on driver side door will not turn with key.

Lock on glove compartment will not unlock.

Driver side door handle cracked and had to be replaced.

Brakes need to be repaired too frequently.

Many front end problems, such as wheel bearings, control arm, ball bearings, etc...

Repairs and maintenance are expensive.

General Comments:

I love the performance of the car. It rides quietly and handles beautifully on the road. The gas mileage wasn't too bad either.

I like the look of the car also. It's small, and sporty, but it's a comfortable ride.

If it wasn't for the constant engine trouble that I have had with this car, I would have been completely pleased with my purchase of it.

I have problems with the front bearings also. the door handle broke off because its made out of plastic. The fifth gear broke. even with all these problems it handel's well. you can't beat 30 mpg on the highway. I have 108000 miles on mine and it still can go to 130 mph. It probably can go faster, but I didn't push it.

1998 Dodge Avenger ES V6 from North America

Faults:

Transmission went 4 days after I purchased the car. Dealership fixed after I complained even though the car was used and had a very limited warranty.

Had to replace the two front tires after they both popped on me on the same day. Tire place said the rims had been leaking the air. Back two tires were ready to go as well.

Driver side window rattles constantly.

A strange, black goo oozes from both doors. I have been told that this is door sealant and one of the major problems with this car.

The front end is so low that I constantly bump and scrape it.

The back end is so high up that I can barely see out the back window.

The turning radius on this car is awful.

General Comments:

I love the looks of the car, but the problems with it seem a little worrisome.

Fast car for the money.

Summary:

It's got balls, and can handle

Faults:

Nothing much, just a rattle in the front dash. That is pretty much it.

General Comments:

Great handling car. It drives like a dream and looks great.

It's a nice car to drive slow, but it's one of the fastest cars I have rode in. It has all the power you could need.

In my opinion it's the best used car you could buy for under 10,000.

1998 Dodge Avenger Sport 2.5 V6 from North America

Summary:

An extremely smooth ride

Faults:

The brakes squeak really bad for the first quarter mile, but then mysteriously stop. Had the pads replaced, but they still squeak.

When replacing the pads, I also found that the rims were near impossible to take off because they had rusted on.

The speed sensor is off by about 3 miles per hour.

I was trigger happy when test driving the car and quickly found that despite the looks, this is not a race car. The transmission slips when trying to shift at about 5000 rpm, and the acceleration is only average.

The front end is too low. I always try to park back from the curb because the front is already cracked.

The paint on the spoiler and side mirrors is faded. Also, the paint on the center cap of one wheel came off when power washing.

Water gets in the headlight covers and fogs up. The covers are also made of cheap plastic and scratch up easily.

The turning radius is very poor.

I have recently started to hear a winding noise when the air conditioner is on.

The back seat is near impossible to see over and I'm 6 feet tall.

General Comments:

This car is smooth in every meaning of the word.

The engine sounds great at a higher rpm, and the muffler purrs.

It hugs every turn like a formula racer.

The interior is comfortable, and it has a roomy back seat for a sporty car.

The car rides smooth even at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

Other than some cosmetic problems that are usual for a car that is 5 years old and some other minor problems, this is a very solid car.
