Unfortunately I feel you may have gotten a raw deal on your Spirit. Maybe it was ragged out before you got it. I have never had any serious problems with mine. They aren't sports cars and can't be expected to be treated like one.

I agree. We have had our 1992 Plymouth Acclaim (identical to the Spirit) in the family since 1998 and although a few things have gone here and there, its been basically a tank. I think this is one of the best cars ever built. Its 2005 and I'm still driving it with over 300K on the original engine and tranny! I think it delivers surprisingly good amount of low end torque for being an older car and I think the original HP was only around 95 or 100.

1992 Dodge Spirit ES 2.5 liter tubo from North America

Summary:

Don't judge a car by it's looks :)

Faults:

Only one problem so far. The speedometer sometimes works and sometimes doesn't work.

General Comments:

1) very, very fast car

2) this is a wolf in sheeps skin

3) no policeman would think that you're speeding in this thing

4) good on gas

5) cheap pocket rocket to race the kiddies and their Hondas.

My dodge transfer part doesn't do well.

I had one and beat a Mustang GT 5.0 with it.

The guy could not believe it.

1992 Dodge Spirit 2.5 four from North America

Summary:

Great Inexpensive Family Car

Faults:

The dome light stayed on constantly so the bulb was removed until the button on the frame for the domelight could be replaced.

Daytime Running Lights don't come on anymore.

ABS bulb in dash burnt out.

General Comments:

This is a very comfy car. I like the fact that I can buy a cheap car and have things like A/C, heated mirrors, cruise control, etc.

Huge cabin. Even tall people are comfy, especially in the front.

Easy to read dash instruments especially at night.

Another well-informed, intelligent comment. Enjoy your Honda.

1992 Dodge Spirit Base 2.5 4 cylinder gasoline from North America

Summary:

It's a Grandma Cruiser with Sports Car pep

Faults:

The car is in overall decent shape.

Paint is starting to fade and wear thin in some spots.

Front bumper has a slight bend in it due to a minor curb impact by the previous owner.

The interior carpeting has worn out and faded in some places.

General Comments:

This car is an ideal road cruiser. While it cannot out perform a mustang, it has great pickup and hugs the turns like a sports car.

After 166,000 miles on the car by the previous owner, this car is still running strong with not a thing wrong with it.

The interior is near perfect and the factory stereo sounds almost as great as a new custom audio deck.

It's not a big car, but it makes great use of space with a roomy interior and spacious trunk.

The Spirit rides smooth and steady, even with the original suspension.

And last of all... I feel safe knowing that there is a driver's side airbag in my car.

1992 Dodge Spirit 2.5L 4 cylinder. from North America

Summary:

Reliable as a Volvo and Economical as an Escort!

Faults:

First Repair ever needed: 95,000 miles -alternator failed; replaced.

120,000 - radiator failed; replaced.

160,000 - head gasket leaked and caused engine head to crack; replaced both parts.

180,000 - 3 of the 4 shocks worn out; replaced.

This car was on the orginal engine and transimission it's whole life (182,000 miles) except for the replaced engine head.

General Comments:

An extremely reliable and long lasting vehicle, especially considering that it is American. Reliability definitely rivals the Accord and Camry. I have owned a Camry and it was nowhere near as dependable.

Gas mileage was excellent at about 32mpg on the highway.

A very comfotable driving vehicle with big, soft split-bench seating and a huge interior and trunk for a compact sedan. Can fit 5 adults in good comfort. Tons of leg, hip, and head room in all seating positions.

Not a single squeak or rattle from the interior in it's entire 182,000 miles of life. No trim ever broke off. Very solid and well built.

Repairs were very inexpensive compared to most cars in this class, especially foreign models. Maintainance was easy as pie... so easy in fact, that I could do tune-ups myself on this car for a quarter of what shops charge and I am no mechanic!

To sweeten the pot even more, these cars are extremely inexpensive to buy used. About half the cost of a comparable Japanese model and just as reliable and long lasting! Problem is, 1995 was the last year they made this gem, so they are quite difficult to find used in good condition. Why oh why did they stop making these wonderful cars!?

Poor "ol' Blue", my ex-Plymouth Acclaim, was totalled in a rear-end impact at 182,000 miles. I do not doubt for a second that she would have lasted past the 200,000 mile mark on the original engine and tranny. Beat that Chevy and Ford!

I totally agree with what this person said- my '94 spirit has 380,000k miles on it, has had no rebuilds, and is still running strong!

4th Feb 2005, 21:35

My transmission just did 215,368 miles and it's a ford.

14th Feb 2005, 14:22

I agree! I love this car its my first baby! I bought it in 2004 at only 039,292...low eh. excellent shape no accidents and its now 2005 and I'm at 67,000...not bad getting up there! but its so far so good!!

7th Aug 2005, 23:15

Very nice your ford transmission went 215,000 - I am surprised the car is running at that # of km - rare for a ford.

10th Dec 2007, 22:10

Well I was the gal that commented there 02/14/05 about my baby. its now 07 (almost 08) and my baby' running at 130,000 still fairly low km's. but excellent excellent car!! its been so reliable and a great drive that I think I'm just going run her in the ground. who needs a 30,000$$$ car loan?? not me!!!
