Zero, Ziltch, zip, nada...
A car for enthusaist, Many say its unreliable, but I am here to sway opinions.
Being a DSM (diamond star motors) enthusaist for quite some time, and this being my 2nd DSM, and my brother having 5, I know my way around these cars well. If you have a stupid off the wall comment like your civic SI beats these all day, please keep to yourself. Thanks.
The car is great, 187xxx on the clock, and the paint shows no wear!!! DSMs 4g63t engine have been known to take the stock 195 hp to 1200hp (john shepard, brent rau...) and street cars have done 500whp numerous times!!! An ultra solid powerplant consiting of an iron block, alum head. Can handle 400whp ALL stock any day if in good condition.
AWD grips like glue, have launched in 4 inches of rain at 6000+rpms with no spin...
Has some mods, new 14b turbo, new stock log manifold, MBC@15psi, kn filter, apexi n1 t-back. Getting quite a bit more, gt32 turbo, support mods...
These cars have been put down into the 11s in the 1/4 with simple, cheap mods... So if your one of the 5.0 mustang boys who wants to reply to this to get heard, think twice...
Tranny does grind, most DSMs do, but what do you expect out of a 16yr old high hp turbo car that has been beat since new?!?!?!
To sum things up, the common DSM stereotypes typicaly are not true, and I drive mine every day, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
John Shepard holds the 1/4 mile record, 7s on a stock bodied car even!!!

I agree completely. I hate hearing all the horrible stereotypes about these cars. I own a 1990 Eclipse GSX and used to own a base 94 eclipse with the 1.8. I loved that car even with only 92hp and manual steering, yes I said MANUAL STEERING! So when I found my car I couldn't pass it up for $2400. All I am writing this to say is that about 2 years later, some major maintenance repairs, some minor, and I have NEVER had a no start condition and every penny of maintenance is worth it!
I have a 1990 TSI all-wheel... I put in a 16g GSR turbo putting out 25psi, 6 puck kevlar clutch in it... and a few more parts... I run all the time in Miami at the strips... I've tore up a lot of Mustangs.
At the drag strip my best time was 11.8. I've raced a lot of people. These cars are nothing to mess with... if you think your Civic GSR is gonna take my car... think again... I used to have a '90 Civic hatch with a GSR all gutted... and I put a turbo on it... my fastest time was a 12.9, so they are not that fast... I can launch my TSI at about 6 grand and still not chirp my tires.
True true true...I'm doing a project and mines going to be in the 600+hp range and hopefully 10's maybe even high 9's, last setup was with a evo3 16g and pulled a 12.4 sec doing 21psi with 110 octane pushing 342hp. bad ass cars.
I love what you guys have to say about these rides!!!I have a 90 TSI myself and so many people say that they are problem cars, but I don't want to believe it. I just wanna know if these cars are known for blowing timing belts??? Thank You.
DSM ROCK NO OTHER CARS LIKE THEM
I agree with all of you guys. these are the best cars ever it is my first and I never wanna buy a different kind. mine might have been ridden hard by previous owner, but I still love it and I get mad when people say its junk because of a couple things that went wrong, but yea it is from 1990 what do you expect. I also love how they feel like a cockpit when your driving everything is right there in reach.
I just bought a 1990 Talon tsi 2 wheel drive and everybody is telling me you can't drive it like you would a Civic, cause in order to get the car going, you have to boost up the turbo or what not, and it's stock... So what do you guys think???
Another thing is when I am driving, it sounds like a lot of air ain't going into the turbo, and someone told me I should get it looked at, but I wanted to know what I could do to it to get it to run 13's, like low 13's...
Any help.. anybody.. LOL... email me at hondalvr95@aol.com.. and it's my girls email.. so don't hate on the Hondas LOL.
I bought a 1990 talon tsi awd for $300 (no engine) and then put a new block in it and balanced it, put in:
Micro polished crank, je inverted dome top pistons, 16g garrett turbo (ported), balance shaft removed, 750cc injectors, dsm programmable ecu chip, acl racing rod and main bearings, manual turbo booster, hks 264i/272e cams, 3 angle valve job to cylinder head, comedic head gasket, bored and shaved block, ported manifold, bored intake header, K&N air intake, and opened the entire exhaust system to 2 and 1/2 inch with custom muffler, no cat. converter.
All built for $7500.00 (with nice hook up deal). This car is stupid nasty... like being fired from a cannon... like blasting off in a rocket. Very happy.
I'm gonna buy a 90 Talon AWD Turbo that won't start. Will it be worth it??? And why is it not sparking?? Any reply helps thx.
I have a bone stock 90 eclipse turboed that's been sitting in the junk yard for the past couple months I fixed it put a bigger turbo on it and it runs great the only problem is everyone in my town has civic they never have heard of DSM or anything like that and I have no competition against them ill give them six in the move and still pull six or more on them, but on my rear bumper it says you got to love this veiw ha ha ha!
I bought a 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi, the previous owner says it is FWD but it launches great like it's AWD, so I pretend it's AWD haha. For those questioning why it won't spark, you might have the firing order wrong, and need new plugs, my ran like crap, but I got new plugs and wires, and figured out the firing order and it ran like a gem. but now I have a problem with my clutch it gets stiff half way to the floor and it is hard to push it in, any ideas?
I used to love Honda. I had a 92 Teg and my buddy has a 98 TSI AWD and always gave me crap about it. Then one of my buddies begged me to sell him the Teg, but I told him no. Then I saw a 90 TSI AWD for a G and said hey gimme a G and the Teg is all yours. So I got the Talon and wow, once I figured out how to launch that thing, it was NOTHING like a Honda. Don't get me wrong, I'll still take a Honda for a daily driver :) but yeah the damn engine blew so now I got a rebuilt 4g63 from a buddy. I got an Evo 3 16g cyclone intake manifold DSM chip 550 fic injectors xs ic... can't wait to put it all in and get my DSM back on the streets!!!
Hey, I have a 1990 Eagle Talon with a 16g and 550cc injectors, but its idling really weird. Anyone know what could be wrong?
