1998 Fiat Punto 16v Sporting 1.2 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Loads of body roll for your money

Faults:

I have had nothing go wrong with the car although I have only had it just over a month.

General Comments:

Do not buy this car if you expect to go round corners fast. After my 205 XS this car just seems to make pathetic attempts to corner. Go into a corner at anything over 30mph at your be in the passengers lap or hitting the window. I have p700z's and yet it still manages to slide round corners like its on ice.

Performance (straight line) is great I manage to keep up with my old 205 XS (1.4 twin choke CARB) and in 5th I out accelerate it.

1998 Fiat Punto Sporting 1.2 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The fast Banana!

Faults:

The side skirts were cracked at the front mountings when I bought the car. As I bought it in Ireland and Imported it, the dealer suggested I contact my local dealer to get them replaced under warranty. This was refused, saying I had to get it in writing that they were damaged at purchase. I couldn't be bothered and they stayed like that.

I had an off-side rear blow out on the M25 a couple of months after I bought the car. Trying to get replacements Pirelli P6000's was a nightmare and had to settle for P700-Z's at a cost.

The windscreen needed replacing after a crack developed up the passenger side from a stone chip. This was done on my insurance.

Replaced front tyres at 26K with Continentals.

New front pads needed at last service.

Remote Central locking fob packed up £40 for a new one plus £5 to get it cut!!!

General Comments:

I imported this car from a dealer in Ireland after reading about how someone did the same and would thoroughly recommend it, I saved over £3000 on the list price with all taxes and import costs paid.

I decided on the Broom Yellow over the Silver and I'm glad I did, it is a real looker.

The performance is great for a 1.2 litre engine, beating most cars away from the lights and quickly speeding up from 50-80 on a motorway.

I was sorry to sell the car after covering just over 40K miles in 3 1/2 years, but I am getting married soon and selling the car was a way of saving money.

If I could afford it, I would buy another one tomorrow, possibly an HGT.

1998 Fiat Punto 60s 1.25 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap nippy town car

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 30,000 miles.

Drivers window mechanism broke at 10,000.

Drivers seat frame split when new.

General Comments:

I have lowered the car by 40mm and upgraded to 195/40 r15 tyres which has improved the cars road holding no end.

It is probably the quickest 1.2 standard model car on the road, but must be revved high to achieve any performance.

A K&N air filter conversion improved throtal response and economy.

1998 Fiat Punto SX 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Superb small, first car

Faults:

When the car was first purchased a slight oil leak was present near the Gasket on the car, but was fixed easily and within an expected cost for the repair and has been fine since. Apart from that for a 4 year old car, when bought, it is in excellent condition and a very very sturdy car.

General Comments:

An excellent, cheap and ideal first car for a young driver.

The SX offers a more involved and refined car compared to the S version for no more extra running or maintenance costs.

The suspension is very hard and not smooth and 'bouncy' on rough terrain or very bumpy roads.

The low petrol indicator does tend to come on very early when there is still a high volume of petrol still in reserve.

1998 Fiat Punto ELX 1.2 16v from Greece

Summary:

Great little car

Faults:

Nothing really.

Except for the regular services this car was pretty much reliable.

General Comments:

Great performance as concerned for the 16 valve engine with the 85 hp.

A lot of space for passengers and luggage.

Great driving behavior in general.

Didn't much like the feeling of the steering wheel though.
