1984 Ford Escort L 1.3 CVH from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cheap, solid, comfortable 1st car!

Faults:

Well to be honest, not much has gone wrong with this car apart from the usual wear and tear of todays motoring. The most resent problem I had with it was the rear bearings needed changing, which wasn't expensive.

Its mainly little annoying things that happen with it, like it rattles or sometimes takes a few turns to start. Nothing drastically wrong.

General Comments:

This car is my really my first car as the Panda I bought for £50 had to be scrapped. I bought my Escort L for £275. It has got to be the best condition Escort of this age that I've seen. Its almost immaculate. The seats and steering wheel were changed before I got it to the XR3 parts, which are much more comfortable and a lot sportier. It has the standard 155 80 R13 wheels which actually handle quite well. There is quite a bit of body roll though. Its performance is well up to todays traffic with a 0-60 time of 11.5 seconds. (It will keep up with a 1.8 Vectra) Top end speed is poor (not much more than 100mph I expect) as it only has the 4 gears, which I might change to a 5 speed box one day. All in all it's a great car and I shall be sorry to see it go when I get a new car.

1984 Ford Escort L 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Far better choices than this

Faults:

Ground to a halt every 30 miles or so for no apparent reason.

Fuel leaked almost everywhere, despite repeated repairs.

Engine was smoky and lacked power.

Steering and suspension defective.

General Comments:

Not a very good car really. Lacked power, wasn't economical and was unreliable.

Not very comfortable either.

Not a lot going for it really.

1984 Ford Escort L 1.3 from Finland

Summary:

A great value car with pretty good comfort

Faults:

It's a bit cranky in the morning, it runs on three cylinders from time to time... that is now in the winter. I suspect something is wrong in the carb.

Broken rear shock spring, a broken headlight bulb, in other words just normal wear and tear.

General Comments:

A nice car, I wouldn't mind travelling across the country in it. I can sit comfortably in it although I'm over 195 cm tall. I have trouble finding a comfortable position in my mother's Volvo 460, but in my Escort I've been driving for hours without a problem. In other words, quite a roomy car as long as you don't need to stuff any grownups in the backseat :)

It have never failed on me in a year of ownership. Great heating system and it's not so bad in snowy weather either. I've never got stuck with it.

It's NOT a fast car, but what can you expect from an 1.3 liter carb engine? I have had it up to 160km/h according to the speedometer, about 150 in real life. It's fast enough if I don't need to overtake something that travels faster than 100kmh.

Overall, a great little car. I'm happy with it.

1984 Ford Escort L 1.1 petrol from Netherlands

Summary:

A low-performance cheapo!

General Comments:

I bought my Escort for 700 guilders (about 200 pounds) and it just keeps on going. Of course it is a bit slow, but what would you expect from a 1100 cc engine? I built in a loud stereo-system to improve my pleasure in driving, because the Escort corners a lot less spectacularly than my Panda.

So what did you think in general about the car? I have bought one for my first car and it is very good for a first car. I am 17 and this is only what I could afford, but it's a great car.

1984 Ford Escort LX 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

On the first day I bought it a headlamp fuse went, also interior light faulty.

Tracking is a bit off.

General Comments:

Lovely smooth ride, a real head turner.

Starts first time every time, cheap to insure, and very nice clutch/gear control.

Suspension on a bumpy road can be a bit odd, and acceleration a little slow, but I'm just being picky.

Overall a lovely car, runs on air and a pleasure to drive...I would definitely buy another car from that dealer, very helpful and honest, too!!
