2003 Ford Explorer limited 4.6 V8 from North America

Summary:

Explorer reliability has slipped

Faults:

Air conditioning failed.

Transmission failed 3 times.

Rear window recall.

Shock failed.

General Comments:

This is the third explorer I have owned and it is by far the least reliable.

The transmission problems are still not fixed, it still clunks and shudders at low speed and after three separate trips to the dealer the mechanic admitted that there have been some problems and recalls with these transmissions.

I too have had problems with the transmission. Ford will lose a lot of customers for ever because of this.

As I sit here and type this my 2003 explorer is in the shop for what I consider a transmission problem. The dealerships however is still trying to figure out what is wrong even though the check engine soon light is on. This is my second explorer and my last!!!

2003 Ford Explorer Base 4.0L from North America

Summary:

All around a nice suv

Faults:

N/A.

General Comments:

Took my Lexus RX300 to Lexus dealer to replace the rear main seal (covered under warranty). Lexus dealership let me borrow a 2004 Ford Explorer a few days. It had about 1500 miles, and no 3rd seat. All power controls and cloth seats. Blue ext., Black int.

Cons about the Explorer:

1. When parked in the garage, I could not fully open the rear hatch. Or it would hit the garage's roll-up door frame.

2. After stopping or slowing down, when accelerating the transmission would shift slowely to a lower gear. Kinda felt like a transmission hesitation.

Pros about the Explorer:

1. Looks great.

2. Runs/rides smooth.

3. Maybe the fuel mileage isn't too bad considering the size/power of the suv.

My Lexus RX300 averages about 19mpg.

4. Fits inside the 3rd car garage!

5. I hear it comes with a 3rd seat.

6. Nice tow rating.

7. Nicely laid-out dash controls.

8. I think it had rear vents and cup holders too.

9. Comes in 4wd and 2wd models.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT from North America

Summary:

Great Stylish Truck!!!

Faults:

The alarm went haywire and I could not get the car open. Had to have the car towed back to dealer. The final outcome was that after having a n after market automatic starter put on, there was an electrical problem with the automatic starter and the factory alarm. This was not Ford's fault.

Other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

I have third row seating and I hate it. No one can really sit back there comfortably. I wish there was a way I could push the third row seats down and push my second row back to make more room.

2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac from North America

Summary:

I love my Explorer Sport Trac!!!

Faults:

I have an Explorer Sport Trac. I just love the vehicle. It cost me a little more than I wanted to spend, but it has been my favorite vehicle so far.

It sits really high up so I can safely see what other vehicles in front of me are doing.

It's super convenient with 4 doors and the bed extender that's removable.

I use synthetic oil to extend my gas mileage, because that is the one thing I'm not impressed with after driving cars my whole life.

I get about 20 miles per gallon. With gas prices soaring, I'm getting rid of it.

I have had issues with the tailgate squeaking when it is up, so I usually drive with it down just so I don't have to hear the squeak.

The steering wheel started wearing really badly and I have an appointment to fix that since I have bumper to bumper.

I'm a little concerned lately because it idles a little rougher than it used to, like it needs new spark plugs. And it's way too early in its life for that.

General Comments:

This truck keeps me from getting tickets. It is too much work to get it to speed. I feel like the gas is just draining out of it.

The seats could be a little better, but I'm one of those people that would like it to completely mold to give me great posture.
