1999 Ford F150 XLT Quad Cab 4.6 V8 from North America

Summary:

Good bang for the buck!

Faults:

Just had inner tie rod break at 66,000.

Ball joints do show wear and will need replacement soon.

This truck is plowed with; the extra weight on the front may have triggered the front end parts to loosen up.

Not a bad plow vehicle for people looking to plow with a luxurious, comfortable vehicle.

General Comments:

I love having the four doors and 5 seats; plenty of room for friends, family or even cargo you do not want exposed in the bed.

4.6 V8 with 5spd is plenty powerful enough for the driving I do and also plowing.

Very impressed with the "car like" ride, reliablity and style of this truck.

Much better than my Chevy 1500 350V8 which I also plowed with.

Ford all the way!

1999 Ford F150 XLT 5.4L from North America

Summary:

Nice truck but lacks Toyota quality.

Faults:

Windshield wipers would activate un-commanded. Warranty repair.

Rear window leaked (a lot).Dealer acknowledged this was common. Warranty repair.

Windshield leaked. Turns out the factory installed windshield was too small!Warranty repair.

General Comments:

Not being a Ford guy I was a little suspect about this truck. I inherited it from my father whom had purchased it new shortly before his death.

It has plenty of power and is actually quite smooth as is the transmission.

The ride is nice, especially for a truck.

I have a couple of gripes though. The Braking is unusual in that there seems to be a dead band in relation to brake pedal travel. This has almost cost me a couple near rear endings! I have noticed this tendency on the two other F150's I have driven as well. As you apply brake pedal pressure you decelerate in proportion to pressure and pedal travel-like you're supposed too-but just when you think you'll keep decelerating you realize the rate of deceleration has not increased proportionally with the pressure you are applying. It's as if there is an inch of pedal travel that does nothing.

The other gripe is the plastic interior parts seem a little cheap and the there are too many sharp seams from the molding process. Looks very unfinished.

1999 Ford F150 Work Series 4.2L V6 from North America

Summary:

Don't buy the V6!

Faults:

500 miles: Broken plastic hub cap.

16000 miles: Transmission is leaking.

General Comments:

For the most part this truck is OK.

Do not buy the V6, it's unrefined and weak.

The automatic transmission finds overdrive too soon causing the engine to lug at speeds below 55 mph.

Bench seats offer no lumbar support.

Anyone knows don't buy a V6 in a full size truck.

The V-6 offers plenty of power paired with a five-speed 3.55 rear end as long as you don't use the truck for towing.

I tow a 18 foot fish and ski with my 4.2 using only the bumper hitch. It weighs around 1500 pounds. I estimate with my fishing trips over the last 3 years that I have pulled the boat ~2500 miles.

I got the 99 F150 4.2 spi on 24s, and the truck runs like a champ with 129,000 miles, and no problems..

I have a 1999 F150 with the 4.2 V6. It's got plenty of power. Maybe yours needs a servicing or the MAF sensor cleaned.

1999 Ford F150 XL 4.2L V6 Gasoline from North America

General Comments:

Good Value for the money, get the V8 if you do any pulling or work whatsoever. And get the split bench seat, the flight bench does not recline.

Great truck overall!!
