Haven't owned it for long, but the Ford Fairmont is very comfortable.
Interior room is awesome.
Cruise control nice.
Quiet ride.
Plenty of smooth power.
I'm pleasantly surprised at how economical the 4.0 litre engine is.

Summary:
This car is for the serious young driver
Faults:
There are not many things that I can say that have gone wrong with my EF. It is a good car, strong engine and transmission. The only thing that has gone wrong is the power steering pump leaked a lot, but was easy fixed with a new high pressure line.
General Comments:
It has a great body with good seats, excellent driving feel, even though the brakes squeak a little. This is an excellent second car, and when compared to my first car, a 92 Commodore, it gets excellent fuel economy.
On the highway gets off to an easy 110ks and sits well on the road. The only thing I can tell that is bad is it has a tendency to lose traction through larger roundabouts, and likes to let its back end out.

Summary:
Nice family sized sedan, with good looks
Faults:
The air conditioning compressor seized up and therefore stopped the engine turning over due to the serpentine belt. Apparently this is rare.
Then the auto transmission started playing up and now needs replacing or repair to fix the 2nd gear cogs, as the auto is jumping into limp mode fairly regularly. Annoying and dangerous to drive at the moment.
General Comments:
All else is working well. Replaced original suspension with XR6 units and the vehicle is much more stable to steer, and far more precise. A bit firmer, but an excellent compromise between, comfort and performance.
Drives well, steers well, and stops very well, considering its size and weight.

High performance luxury
Faults:
Recently the speed sensor on the transmission failed leaving me with no speedometer. Not long before that the power steering pressure sensor started leaking loosing all power steering fluid.
I am told that these two items are common faults in the EF/EL models, luckily they are not very expensive and I was able to replace both items myself.
General Comments:
From my experience the EF Fairmont Ghia is a very reliable car. I myself give this car a very hard time and it has never let me down. My car has been heavily modified for performance and has 130KW at the rear wheels. But just like every EF Falcon / Fairmont its steering is a touch sloppy on the road.

The steering on you car is probably sloppy because the steering rack has done 180'000km of hard work, which is more than enough to wear out a rack. Try getting a rebuilt rack and ask for it to be extra tight and you won't have sloppy steering anymore. I have an EF Fairmont, and have replaced all my steering, I. E - Rack, pump, pressure lines, tie rod ends and its perfect! Also having ball joints upper and lower in good condition also helps!
Have you got Camber/Castor kits?? They also make a huge difference! Regards.

Faults:
Electric antenna does not rise or retract fully.
Front right hand disk brakes groans when strained. It also makes severe scraping sound when applying brakes at low speed.
Fairmont front grille was not fitted properly.
General Comments:
The car fits three grown teenagers in the back seat relatively comfortably for long trips.
The car looks and feels classy. A great Fairmont trait.
I plan to spend a bit of money on the car. Tinted windows, rear spoiler, seat covers and mats. I need to car to last me at least 10 years. I have owned my current 1981 Nissan Skyline GT EL 13yrs. I still plan to use it for work.
A great bargain for low mileage and good nick.
