2004 Ford Freestar Limited 4.2 from North America

Summary:

Great car with very impressive acceleration

Faults:

To date, nothing has gone wrong with this vehicle.

It appears to have the same tires, which need replacement, but did make it through the very snowy winter we had in Southeastern Michigan the winter of 2010-2011.

I do not like the adjustment for the seat back on the driver's seat; small, but irritating.

General Comments:

I read all the information about the transmission failure prone to this car. I was aware, but the 4.2 liter has a different transmission.

The car I read is slow; I can honestly say I LOVE the acceleration of this vehicle.

The dual sliding doors are wonderful compared to the 1995 Windstar this van replaced. I love the self storing of the third seat.

The car effortlessly holds 80 mph and tracks dead on.

The gas mileage is depressing, and this is evident when you fill up and it takes 70 bucks.

But so far it has been a very nice family vehicle.

2004 Ford Freestar SE 4.2 from North America

Summary:

OK, but you need deep pockets

Faults:

The transmission had a non catastrophic failure at 105,000 Km. I have a very honest independent transmission specialist. He was aware of the problem. The fluid pump input shaft stripped. $1,200 to repair and it will never fail again. He says that the manufacturer knows what it is. A total rebuild is not required, and the replacement part is superior to original.

At 120,000 Km the engine light flashes and I get a #3 cylinder misfire. Investigation shows the coil pack is badly cracked and has water in it. Pack replaced, plugs and wires at the same time. Try this job and you'll see why you do it all now. Cost about $200. I am a mechanic and do it myself.

General Comments:

The vehicle is overall very nice. The biggest problem is the labour costs involved, on the problems you can pretty well guarantee you are going to have, if you choose to drive one of these.

2004 Ford Freestar llimited from North America

Faults:

I purchased this van in March 2010, drove it for about 2 weeks, and the transmission started slipping, so I took it to a transmission shop and spent almost 3,000.00 to have it rebuilt. I still lose reverse, and the transmission light comes on every now and then.

After some research I have heard there is a problem with the van design. When it rains, water runs down the windshield. It gets under the hood and drips on the computer. When it gets wet it causes transmission problems and other engine problems.

These vans were so bad Ford stopped building them. Next time check out Consumer Reports before making the purchase.

The Windstar AND Freestar were both horribly designed, unsafe vehicles. Check out "sub-frame rust" on the Windstar to see just how dangerous this car is.

2005 Ford Freestar Limited 4.2 from North America

Summary:

Great performance, when it's working properly!!

Faults:

Engine is running, and the car won't move.

General Comments:

I thought I found a deal when I purchased a 2005 Ford Freestar with 27,563 miles on it earlier this year, and it has turned out to be a nightmare.

The car has stopped twice since we purchased it. We stop at the light, and when it turns green, we press on the gas and it does not move!!! I found out on the Internet that this has been an ongoing problem with many people who have bought the Freestar and no recall from Ford!! I had a 1999 Ford Windstar for 8 years without a major problem.

2004 Ford Freestar Limited 4.2 from North America

Faults:

I recently bought a 2004 Ford Freestar, and it seems everything is going wrong with it.

The speedometer just stopped working, my message center is showing errors on everything, and now my check engine light has now come on.

It seemed like a good vehicle when I bought it, but now seems like a big mistake for even thinking of buying a Ford.

Like they say, Found On Road Dead. I will never buy another Ford as long as I live.

General Comments:

It's a pile of junk.
