1999 Ford Puma 1.7 VCT from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good fun if you don't have passengers

Faults:

Rear parcel shelf kept falling out when opening the rear hatch. Cured by wrapping insulating tape around locating spindle to make a tighter fit.

Central locking remote required reprogramming. Dealer wanted £35. Got information off the Internet. Took 10 seconds to program for free.

General Comments:

The Puma has such sharp handling and engine response it can often embarrass more expensive and powerful cars, especially on twisty roads.

1999 Ford Puma 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Stylish and fun car with serious cross country ability

Faults:

Rear lights steamed up.

Gearbox mounting loose on delivery.

Squeak from the back of the car which the dealer could not fix.

General Comments:

This car is simply awesome on the right road. Fast, fun and safe, it will bring a smile to your face every time you drive it.

Engine begs to be reved although the car is not particularly powerful. The chassis is so good it needs more power.

The car is reliable and surprisingly good over long distance. VCT means fuel economy is excellent if you are gentle (however I challenge anybody to be gentle for too long).

Summary:

Crowbar the smile from my face

Faults:

My brakes are noisy, but you can live with that.

I lost my wiper caps too.

General Comments:

The best handling car I have ever driven. A real joy to blast down back roads with, and she looks great.

She is very uncomfortable over long distances though and the seats are awful.

But I still love her.

1999 Ford Puma Lux 1.7 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great fun!!!! Average build quality

Faults:

Parcel shelf kept on falling out when the boot was opened. Replaced by the dealer with an improved design.

Crack in the dash panel meant the dash had to be replaced.

Radio security panel keeps switching the radio off as the contacts do not make.

Gear box sometimes makes a grinding noise at low revs.

General Comments:

Interior quality not too good. Poor trim fit, scratches on trim bits and drip, runs and dirt in the paint.

Water runs in the boot still.

Seat position required by tall people means there are a number of blind spots.

Excellent fun to drive, stiff body and lively engine that always wants to keep on going.

Summary:

Pocket Rocket.......

Faults:

Rattles from the gearbox.

Faulty fuel sensor causing it to look and smell like a two stroke engine.

Windscreen wipers are a joke.

ABS calibrates every time you start up and reach 15-20 mph.

General Comments:

Handles like a dream, Nova SR drivers love to stare.

Best performance car money can buy.

I love the handling of the car!!

1999 Ford Puma 1.7 VCT petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The affordable feel-good car

Faults:

Throttle sensor replaced under warranty.

Some trim rattles around the car.

General Comments:

The best car for the money, provided you don't need the interior space.

Great fun to drive, exceptionally stable at all speeds, albeit with some tramlining on braking on certain surfaces.

Very sweet engine which revs freely and is very economical (30MPG average) given the performance on offer. Outright acceleration is fair, in gear acceleration is very useful and overall spread of torque makes for easy driving about town - no frantic revving unless you want to :)

Ride and handling is unbeatable... firm but extremely well controlled. Brakes are adequate rather than outstanding.

Quality is acceptable and at least Ford have tried to make the interior as lively as the exterior... in fact most other cars interiors are dull in comparison.

Overall the car feels very individual and personal, just as small coupes should.

1999 Ford Puma 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Trouble

Faults:

The usual - water pouring into the boot, front tyres wearing on the inside, interior door light has packed up and I have replaced the bulb and fuse to no effect!

The leather trim on the steering wheel is starting to peel off, and has anyone else noticed that on a trip any longer then 50 miles the power just seems to drain from the engine!

General Comments:

Car is well balanced, good on fuel and looks well.
