I don't know how the others who have complaints drove or maintained their 99 Ford Taurus, but honestly I have been very satisfied with mine. I purchased it new, and now it has over 120K miles on it. The problems I am having now with it is due to shoddy mechanic work when I had the belt replaced. I would definitely buy another Ford vehicle.

I bought a 99 Taurus, and it was one of the best cars I have ever owned. Sure I had to make repairs, but most cars do need to be repaired; living close to the ocean, I always have my car undercoated, and it is in fine shape.

I have a 99 Taurus SE, and the only problem I had is the heater; 400.00 dollars, and it was fixed!!! Perhaps your car might have just been a bad one, who knows, but as far as Ford goes, buy American!

I have absolutely nothing good to say about this car at all. I received this car at under 30k miles only driven by my grandfather lightly for a few years in 2008 or so. Since getting this car, we must have spent over 5 thousand dollars in repairs and maintenance costs, and it now has only 65k miles. Things to note:

Every single computer died in the car at once, due to oil (?!?!?!) somehow leaking into the computers and frying them.

SEVERAL emissions parts have failed (gas tank purge valve), leading to probably 1000+ in repairs to just smog the car.

The transmission does not sound at all well.

Back right passenger window hasn't worked for 2 years.

A/C has been broken for some time.

After being to the Ford dealership, they apparently didn't check the coolant to find out it had degraded, and was now corroding the thermostat fitting.

The best part:

While driving the car into San Francisco recently, it suffered a loss of coolant to the engine, but never warned of high temperatures (though they were observed). So at 65K miles it probably needs a new engine or heads, along with a water pump or a thermostat. Also, the turn signals and emergency flashers stopped working after the overheating incident so maybe a new wiring harness is in order?

Something I didn't see mentioned much, but of more daily frustration: Who designed this car? The seats offer no back support whatsoever. Who looked at the center console cupholder/storage/armrest abomination and thought: "Yeah, that looks good and it's also functional."? You can't put any cups or water bottles in it, they all fall out. You can't have the cupholder-thing out and also use the cigarette lighter/12v power outlet. You can't access your storage if you need a front middle seat. The visibility over your shoulders in your blind spots is atrocious, and it's a safety hazard the way the back "jellybean" window is designed.

I bought a used 1999 Taurus SE with 139,000 miles.

It drove fine for a couple months, except I noticed the A/C didn't work and the heater blower motor only worked on high. Figured I could live with that.

But then power steering fluid started leaking, so I took it to my mechanic and he told me that a seal was leaking on the rack and the whole rack and pinion assembly had to be replaced because evidently the power steering is attached in some way and there is no separating the two. This is supposed to cost $568.

The brakes are shot and the rear needs new drums. Oh and the transmission is starting to act funny, too. It surges and jerks and I think it's only a matter of time before that goes out, too.

I was warned not to buy a Ford and now I know why. My other car is a Chevy Cavalier, also a 1999, and it has 240,000 miles and is still going strong! I'll never buy a Ford again.

It seems to me that you may have gotten a lemon. I've had my Taurus for over 10 years. I haven't had anything bad happen with mine. And it's got over 200,000 miles on it. If I were you, I would check in to see what legal action you can take. I'm very sorry to hear yours has nickel and dimed you to death.
