1992 Ford Telstar Ghia 4WS 2.5 V6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Comfortable and modern new car alternative

Faults:

Leaking factory fitted sunroof - difficult and expensive to fix.

Small rust spot on drivers side of windshield, easy to fix, although color hard to match.

Lift-back hydraulic arms dead, but this is apparently a common problem (the lift-back weighs a tonne)!

General Comments:

The interior of this car is well appointed, and if looked after it doesn't look 12 years old. The lift-back Ghia came factory fitted with everything, and everything is in excellent working order (except the sunroof).

The 4 wheel steering system is in great condition, though I have been warned it can be costly to fix. A little strange to drive at first, it is something I will miss if I sell this car. ABS and drivers airbag make it relatively safe compared to new cars.

The 2.5 V6 is very smooth, with heaps of power on demand. The manual 'box is excellent and makes the most of the V6. The cabin is well insulated from engine and traffic noise.

I have been lucky enough to find one in black, with original factory alloys/body kit/fog lamps. Several friends (that don't know cars very well) have commented on what a great "new" car this is - and are shocked when I tell them it's 12 years old. I can see myself happily driving this car for several years to come.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

A year ago I assisted my daughter in her hunt for a decent car. We found a silver '92 2.5 V6 manual 4WS TX5 Ghia hatch with 185,000kms on the clock. It had been fastidiously cared for and the interior was immaculate. What impressed was how quiet it was - you only hear a distant growl when you gun the accelerator. She has had few problems with it, mainly of a maintenance nature. A brilliant, very comfortable long-legged tourer that gets in and out of the tightest carparking spots with ease. Of course, being 4WS, it pays to visit the 4WD experts when replacing tyres.
