1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3L Turbo from North America

Summary:

Great car, yet needs to be kept maintained in good condition or else it could cause major problems

Faults:

The transmission for one. I am having it serviced right now so I am not sure exactly what the problem was. Since I just bought the car I am not sure what else will go. This seems like a car that may have a lot of problems.

General Comments:

I honestly love this car. Although it is not the fastest thing in the world, it still kicks ass. If this car was worked on it would be better. The car handles real well and has great luxury. The turbo is fun and has great pick up. It is pretty good on gas. As far as maintenance is concerned, I think that as long as the car is kept in good shape there should be no major problems. The only thing that no one can argue about is the sleek design.

There are anecdotal reports of motor mount problems on the '87 & '88 Turbo coupes as they age. I have read warnings to shore up the left mount, I think it was. If it breaks, you'll reportedly need a new intercooler and hood!

1987 Ford Thunderbird Sport 302 (5.0 liter) SEFI V8 from North America

Summary:

A durable solid survivor that has lasted a long time

Faults:

Mostly previous owner neglect, had to replace all the shocks, hoses, brake service, u-joints, axle bearings & one axle shaft and it still had it's original transmission fluid! At least they changed the oil. Also the cruise control was dead, had to replace that too.

General Comments:

Classic solid car, Still not a burner of oil, plenty of get up and go. Prone to rust like most Fords of that vintage, just means a little more care in washing and waxing.

Good "investment", appreciated $300.00 in retail value in one year. Also it doesn't get lost in a sea of Hondas and Nissans.

Found out that when the engine was washed, the throttle linkage was dry of all oil lube. WD-40 works, but lithium grease might be better. That might do it. Also check the vacuum lines. They are old. Now if I could only get it to steer itself...

I've since given the Tbird to a friend of mine. It's way past 200K and going strong, but rust is starting to kill the unibody and it will be structually unsafe in a few years. Too bad. If Ford had only used galvanized steel in that year, this would not be as serious as it is. A sad end to a faithful beast.

1987 Ford Thunderbird 3.8 from North America

Faults:

Has a tendency to eat its water pump for some reason. Has an oil leak that's not severe, but will cost big bucks to find and fix.

General Comments:

For a used car, I would recommend it, if you get it checked out first. Has plenty of torque in spite of being a 6 banger.
