1998 GMC Jimmy from North America

Summary:

Reliable

Faults:

Got a flat, but nothing major has ever happened.

General Comments:

I love this car.. I'm a little sad it's getting old, but at 165k it still starts perfect and every time. I've gotten one flat tire in the almost 10 years I've owned the thing. It's starting to need new parts, but my little clunker has never left me. And I've used and abused my poor little car..

1998 GMC Jimmy SLE 4.3 vortec from North America

Summary:

Great reliable vehicle

Faults:

Back seat belts don't like to latch... that is kind of a big one for me... I have a son.

Within the first month the transmission started acting up... got the dealer to replace it. Had it replaced with a junkyard one. Recently had it rebuilt due to seal failure.

I've replaced the fuel pump twice.

Here's a tip; don't run it low below a 1/4 of a tank, the pump doesn't like it.

Door panels broke. I fixed them once.

Door hinge pins had to be replaced, but I did it too late, causing the plates to get worn beyond repair. Eventually causing the latch to cave in my door... needed it welded. Door shuts but rattles.

Turn signal control has a short in it. It always says I have a door open. Gotta love the override.

Had to replace a windshield wiper motor.

General Comments:

Overall engine has run great. Good power. Definitely needs reprogramming. I get an average of 20.3 mpg highway at about 70mph. Handles great.

Never been stuck.

I love this ride.

1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3 Vortec from North America

Summary:

Great value, reliable car

Faults:

Driver's seat has worn through to the base.

Passenger seat frame broke.

Went through 4 fuel level sensors in tank at 50,000, 120,000, 285,000, and 312,000.

Went through 2 transfer cases; first replaced at 160,000, and then at 310,000.

Transmission at 300,000.

Front end went and had steering components replaced at 290,000.

General Comments:

Excellent SUV. Bought for $500 and have driven with normal wear ever since.

The SUV had front end problems that were resolved, but I love this truck.

The interior is worn from being a work truck, but everything else has stood the test.

The Vortec 4.3 just won't quit with 375000 miles on the original engine.

1998 GMC Jimmy 4.3 litre gas from North America

Faults:

This thing is an absolute money pit. It seems every time I repair something, the problem moves to somewhere else.

Now the 4 wheel drive stopped working, the heater core went out and it bangs into gear hard when up shifting after driving an hour.

It's my first GM purchase, and safe to say my last.

General Comments:

Not a driver friendly car. If you like spending money and getting to know your local mechanic really well, buy one.

1998 GMC Jimmy SLT 3.0 from North America

Summary:

A Jimmy is a nightmare

Faults:

It needed a brand new transmission at 30,000 miles. I have replaced the Upper and Lower ball joints. The Front Axle seal leaked, the Front differential seal leaked. Upper and Lower Cooler lines have been replaced, twice. The Shifting mechanism would not shift out of park. The parking brake would not release. The windshield washer lines do not stay connected. Alternator has been replaced. That is the things I can remember.

General Comments:

This vehicle is very fun to drive and carries cargo very well. The cab is very comfortable and the accessories are very luxurious. Although it has been a nightmare to keep running. I would not recommend the purchase of a GMC, Jimmy as it will nickel and dime you in the repair shop. I was once told by a mechanic, "Jimmy's are a mechanic's best friend, because they are always in the shop."
