I purchased a new Hyundai Tiburon in July of 2001. I have nothing, but great things to say about the service I have received from the dealership, however I have had some minor problems with the car. Mostly nosies and the like, certainly no paint problems. As another posting said the key is washing and WAXING regularly.
Another guy said
"Don't take a chance, stick to Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, or some car like that. I got rid of my Hyundai only 5-months after I bought it because it was falling apart. Don't loose all your money like I did. Just buy a name brand car the first time and save yourself a ton of problems.
Examples to buy=Accord, Camry, Taurus, Grand prix, mustang, etc. Stay safe.
Three of my friends own gm products and another owns a ford and all of them have had problems with their transmissions. My Father in law has a grand prix and has had the trans replaced four times. ALL CARS are now made in the cheapest possible way, by the lowest bidders. It's a fact.
Happy Tiburon Driver.
Just bought a used 2003 Black Tib, like a fool I bought it at night with out getting a good look at the paint, it looked dirty because they hadn't washed it yet and the water spots on the hood I took for that. After a good wash and wax I found them to be the spider web cracking of clear coat problem everyone else is having. The next time I went to the dealer I showed it to them and they said the area rep, which works the entire southeast coast of the U.S. would have to decide on it. It's only been a few weeks and I have about ten more spots and I've wash it at least once a week. All of your comments are great; I plan on printing them and taking them to the rep one my first meeting. Love the car, hate the paint.
Our family owns a 1999 Sonata (green - 112,000 miles), 2002 Elantra (blue - 43,000 miles) and a 2003 Sonata (white- 8,300 miles). We haven't had any paint problems at all. I wonder if the problem is prevalent in Black?Actually, we have not had any problems at all with any of the cars. We are adding a Tiburon V6 in a few weeks.
My girlfriend had just bought a 2001 Tiburon (white) and the paint is mint the only problem is that the O2 sensor went and the check engine light came on. I am purchasing a 1999 Tiburon (red) which the paint looks great, but has a small dent on hood, which is the only problem found on the car.
Glad I looked around on the web before I went to the dealer with my problem. I have a 2004 Santa Fe' (yes I said 2004) Its the dark blue color. The paint is coming off just like in the other comments. I want to give the dealer a chance to do the right thing first. But if there is going to be a class action. please let me know.

I purchased a 2003 Hyundai Elantra (black) and am experiencing problems with blistering paint on the hood, top & trunk. I also had a problem with a rust spot inside the rear-driver side door.
The dealership agreed to repair the rust spot but not the paint. When I questioned whether the two could be connected they told me absolute not. One had nothing to do with the other. They took a digital photo of one small area & advised me that the District Rep had denied my request for repair because it was due to my lack of proper care for the vehicle. The cited bird - droppings and my lack of cleanliness as the cause. When I called the Customer Service line I was advised that I had the option of going to another deal & re-filing the claim, but that the same district rep would review it and it would be denied again. Has anyone had ANY luck at all? I am open to suggestion.
I have just purchased second hand a Santa Fe. It's quite good except for a paint problem on the roof. Looks like bird droppings, however the car is only 20mths old, I have had several cars over the last 25yrs and never seen this kind of damage done by bird droppings, yes I have seen some minor surface damage to cars when bird droppings are not removed for say a week in hot conditions, but not going almost through to the bare metal. It seems that the top coat is too thin or just poor quality. I have only owned it for two weeks, I doubt that Hyundai will ware it. I had a quote to just cover up the damage (just under 1' in dia) it was for $A300) any suggestions?
I had a similar problem with my 03' Tiburon paint. I printed out the comments posted here and presented them to the Hyundai reps. They refused to look as they were deemed 'hearsay'.
I suppose it's their right. Has anyone else been told that their paint damage was due to 'environmental fallout'? Ha!
I've also had a problem with my car starting recently. Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. I can't wait to get rid of this car. It's beautiful, but not worth the worry. I just wonder what it's going to take for Hyundai to worry about their customers a little more.
Has anyone had a problem with their airbag light coming on and blinking when the car starts for about five seconds and then turning off?
I just bought a brand new 2004 Santa Fe two months ago and the paint is peeling right off the sides and the back bumper. The manager said that they will probably not cover it because rocks chip the paint and then moisture gets under the paint and causes the paint to peel. Pretty lame excuse!! Please contact me if any action is going to take place.

I also have a 2004 elantra. A beautiful car, rides comfortable however it looks awful because the paint chipped off. It is cracking and bubbling and like so many other people's. The dealer told me it was the berry in the bird feces. Everyone around me who hears it says they have never heard of such a thing!
I've got a 2001 Tiburon, luckily, I don't have the paint peel problem, BUT on the bumper, there are swirls in the paint, similar to big finger prints in wet paint, if you can picture that. The bumper is full of nicks and indentations due to rocks, not really a dealer problem though.
THE PAINT DOES SCRATCH REALLLLLY EASILY though. There are lines, scratches, chips, everywhere from the roof/hood to the doors and bumpers. It seems the only thing that's still in decent shape is the spoiler. Why not build the body from that material? :o)
Paint problems continue.
My 2005 Tiburon which I purchased new in January 2006 is having the same paint problems and the district service manager barely looked at it before he told me it was bird droppings. He told me that I should clean them off within 24 hours. Right. At this time of year, I go to work when its dark and I come home when its dark, so I'm supposed to take a flashlight outside each night? What if I go away for a weekend - do I need to hire someone to check my car?
I don't expect to win this battle, but I'm not going down quietly.
I have a 04 tiburon black, and also have the cracking, spider webbing on the paint. I took the car to dealer several times, and they said the rep. has to look at it. What a joke the rep is, (bob ritter) he says that it is due to environmental fallout, acid rain, bird droppings, tree sap. I park my car in a garage, so I guess I have tree sap, and birds in my garage. I tried to be patient, but when he told me he is the paint expert, and he has the final word, that made me go to real paint experts in the auto body buisness. I met with the rep again, shocker they send the same one. I now have an arbatration hearing with the better buisness burea, and I am very well equipted with letters, articles, and estimates. I plan on fighting till the end, so my 2 year old car looks 2 years old, not 15. don't give up.
GREEAAAAT. I just bought a used 2001 tiburon se. this is not sounding very promising, although the car IS in great shape, save for a few scratches on the back bumper and driver side door (which the dealership agreed to touch up). ugh, I was really excited when I got the car (i pick it up in four days) but I have been hearing some horror stories. does anyone have ANYTHING positive to say?
