2001 Hyundai Tiburon SE from North America - Comments

"So far so good"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Not too much to list here yet as I've only had this 2001 Tiburon for 6 weeks.

Prior to buying it I had a Hyundai garage inspect it and it needed a rear strut as it was leaking. There was a leaking rad hose, and required two new front tires.

General comments?

I bought this car because of the value, and looks. Also because of the pretty good comments and ratings I found while researching used cars.

I am overall pretty happy so far.

My main concern is an annoying vibration I get once the tachometer hits 3000 rpm. It goes away as soon as 3000 rpm is surpassed. Does anyone else experience this and if so what did you do?

I have that same problem. I took my car to a shop and they told me I needed a tune up. I got the tune up and it kept doing it. I cannot drive my 2001 Hyundai Tiburon past 63mph and 300rpm's or it will shake. I have not yet found the reason, but now I am having another problem... my car won't start? It seems to want to start, but it won't turn over all the way it makes a grinding noise. I am taking it to the shop once again and will comment later as to what is wrong. If you find out anything about the shaking on your vehicle let me know.

I had then Same Problem, I fixed it by removing the rear view mirror (which is what is vibrating) I took it apart and put it back together, it no longer makes that noise.

However my car vibrates at idle to the point of shaking my steering wheel, and entire car.

Anyone had this problem?

I noticed the same thing at 3000 RPM after about 70000 km on my car... and as the previous commenter suggested, I determined it was the rear view mirror. I have also noticed that the vanity mirrors in the sun visors also rattle at about 3000 RPM.

I purchased a 2001 a few months ago. I too had a vibration, but at 2500 rpm. As others have stated, it's the rear view mirror. It's not a problem on a hot day, just when it's cooler. I haven't had enough of a problem to try to fix it yet though. Shouldn't be too hard though.

It looks like many of the problems (vibration, mechanicals, rust etc) come from the prior model Tiburon.

46,000 miles on my V6, Auto 2003 with no rust at all, and I live in NE Ohio where they salt the snow rather than plow it :-)

Also no vibration or RPM problems.

Will probably get an '06 next year.

I have had several problems with my '01 Tiburon. I bought it used in 2004 with 24K miles on it. I'm up to 64K now.

I replaced the O2 sensor early on.

In 2006 I replaced the starter.

During the summer of '07 the drivers side power window broke and would not go up. I had to replace the entire window kit.

The windshield washer motor stopped working in 2007.

The drivers side tail light has a short in it and comes on and off when I drive over bumps.

In the summer of 2008 the transmission case cracked and started leaking tranny fluid. The transmission began to slip. I ended up having to have the entire transmission rebuilt. It cost me $2300.

Now I'm having problems with the lights. The tail lights work but the brake lights do not come on. The only brake light I have is on the fin.

Most recently both headlights stopped working. The high beams and fog lights still work but the low beams do not. All of the fuses are OK. I haven't figured out what the problem is.

I hope all other Tib owners have better luck that I've had. I'm seriously considering dumping this car. Honda or Toyota here I come.
