I have a 2000 jeep xj sport (4x4) that I have fixed a few problems on and maybe I can help first

front end wobble: I replaced the steering stabilizer which worked for a little bit. The permanent fix I found was the the front axle shaft u-joint. If you have the 4 wheel drive version this is a easy fix to do. Just remove a total of 8 bolts and remove the axle shaft (4 on each side) ; it won't hurt anything just you won't have 4 wheel drive until you get the u-joint on the axle shaft fixed and re-installed.

The rear hatch not opening: if you open the hatch and remove the screws and then pull off the plastic cover (it will pop off if you pull straight back on it) once this is off you should see the setup and you will need to take the slack out of the cable so when you pull on the handle it will fully disengage the locking mechanism.

A/c- what fixed mine was the a/c compressor relay, and a/c receiver drier. (if taking your jeep to a dealer make sure they put a back pressure on there to make sure any moisture is evaporated)

Jeep not starting when turning the key- (automatic) try pushing up on the shifter while its in park while simultaneously turning the key.

The turn signal sticks-on mine the blinker relay is located under the dash (the blinker and flashers is all one relay) just keep turning on and off the turn signal and you should hear the clicking of the relay going on and off and then replace it.

Hope these help and questions just ask.

My wife has a 2000 jeep cherokee Sport. We noticed a loud noise when turning at slow speeds. It has a new steering stabilizer on it. Maybe wheel bearings? its almost like a pulsating noise. And its when making hard turns. Don't notice any vibrations or shaking at slow or even high speeds.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport just recently purchased with 92,000 miles. My interior lights stay on. I am not sure why. I turned the knob to brighten and dim the dash lights, but the interior lights remain on. I checked each door plunger to see if the lights go out, no luck. If I disconnect the battery and then reconnect the battery, the lights will come back on in a few minutes. I am not sure what is causing this. Anyone experience this issue and if you have what did you do?

I have a question. I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Whenever I hit a bump on the expressway my car starts shaking violently and I have to press the brakes to come to a complete stop (on the expressway or street which is very dangerous). I have taking my car to the mechanic, but as luck would have it it never shakes when the mechanic is in the car. Has anyone else had this experience?

I bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport one month ago, and I don't know too much about it. I want to get some after-market parts, but in every magazine I read everything is for the "XJ" model. So could someone tell me what is the difference between the "Sport" and "XJ", or are they the same? Please help me out. Thanks.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 105,000 miles on it and I love it. Although I am having some of the same problems that others have listed. The compressor was replaced on the A/C by the previous owners and now is restricting the air. It has caused the belt to make this horrible noise when I first turn it on. We are having that fixed as we speak.

Also when my car is on I can remove the key from the ignition. To fix this we have replace the cylinder and then I will have two keys - one for door - one for ignition!

Finally, the window does not roll down on the passenger side. I can control it with the driver's side controls. My husband has determined there is a short where the wires go from the body into the door. They are being pinched when the door is closed. I am not having this fixed as it is pricey!

I still love my Jeep though and hope that once this is all fixed it will be good as new.

2000 Jeep Grand Limited. AC problems. The air is not blowing cold, and sometimes blows hot when set at low temperatures. Anybody know why from their mechanics before I take it in? I would like to know everyone's experience with the fix.

Yeah same problems, vibrating from 50 to 60, rear hatch, ac, and now the ignition cylinder, anyone know how much the dealer charges or a cheaper place to buy?

I have a 2000 Cherokee sport and like many others had "the wobbles" around the 50-60mph mark. I talked to some other jeep owners and it seems there is definitely a trend with cracked steering stabilizers.

Hello, for my 17th birthday I bought myself the SUV of my dreams a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4 dr auto power everything. LOVE THIS CAR TO DEATH!! I have three major problems.

1) The back hatch does not open all the time, sometimes I have to push it in before opening it.

2) My gages (RPM and MPH) sometimes decide to go out and the lights on the dash light up as if I just started it (the car still runs when this happens and eventually comes back on).

3) I have the SHAKE!!! It started out as bent rims, so I bought $400.00 rims for it (taking away the shake... temporarily). after about a month this scary shake is back only when I drive between 50 and 60MPH.

Tomorrow after school I'm taking it to the "boy's" and I am having them take a look at it. Especially the Track Bar and the Steering stabilizer. I hope this works, I don't want to sell my "truck".

Picked up a 2000 Cherokee earlier this summer. 114,000 miles at purchase. I'm at about 118,000 now. Took a 5 hour road trip this past weekend. It ran fine the whole time, until I started it again an hour or so after arrival. Some kind of strange grinding noise. Seemed to be coming from where the fan connects to the thing it connects to. Turns out that "thing" is the A/C compressor, evac, and all the rest. After a recharge, new parts and a new serpentine she runs like a champ. $1100. Darn. Took the mechanic about 2 hours to do it. Otherwise, so far so good other than the normal creaks and squeaks. Well, I hope they're normal...

If your dash lights go out and then come back on, take a look at this website - there is a connector buried in the dash that has problems. My 2000 Sport does the same thing - I choose to ignore it. Avoid asking the dealer to fix anything unless you are very wealthy.

I just stumbled across this site, and found it interesting that I’m not the only one who has had the speed specific front-end vibration. My 2001 Cherokee vibrates at 55-58 mph, and has done so since it was nearly new. I’ve had it at the dealer numerous times, and they have no clue. One time they put a new steering gear box in (under warranty), but I think that was just a shot in the dark. I’ve chased the problem thoroughly, first with tires, checking for balance and defects. But I’ve ruled them out since I’ve been through three sets, and the problem is there with all of them. I’ve also rotated the tires numerous times. If a tire was the problem, when that tire went to the rear, the problem would go away, or at least move. It does not. It is not a brake problem because the only brake problem that would cause a vibration would be a warped rotor, but I’d feel that in the brake pedal. Besides, I turned the rotors when I replaced the brake pads. That ain’t it. The steering stabilizer (dampener) fixes the problem temporarily. So I think a fresh stabilizer is strong enough to soften the vibration, but it is not addressing the cause of the vibration, it’s just compensating for it. However, for any of you who have a bad vibration after hitting a bump; that is definitely a stabilizer problem. I recently took the Jeep to a suspension/alignment specialty shop, and they checked the entire front end. Everything is tight, and the alignment is perfectly within specs.

So, after fighting this for six years, I’ve developed a theory. I’ve always noticed that the front-end does not return to center after a turn as well as it should (if you let go of the steering wheel after a turn, it should go back to straight ahead). This condition would be caused by insufficient caster settings. Insufficient caster can also cause wheel wobble, like wobbly casters (wheels) on a grocery cart at the grocery store. Unfortunately, the caster angle is set at the factory, and is non-adjustable. I suspect that Chrysler didn’t put a lot of caster in the front-end for some reason. On some vehicles, it’s just not enough. I bet Chrysler knows this, but doesn’t want to acknowledge it. The only fix I can think of would be to install off-set ball joints, and I’m not ready to go down that road yet. I’ll just keep fresh steering stabilizers on it. They’re cheap, and are only a 10-minute replacement.

Getting back to the front wheel squeal which started this thread. I have 2001 Cherokee sport with this problem too, no vibrations at any speed. Squeal starts around 5-10 mph range, continue through to about 25-30 and then disappears. It is definitely coming from left front wheel/axle area. Does not increase or decrease with engine rpm (shifting to neutral and and revving engine does not cause this noise or vary it in anyway.) I don't think problem in the engine compartment because squeal only occurs when car is in motion. I also confirm what others said that it occurs mostly with the onset of colder weather, had this noise last winter, it abated much over the summer, but was still there on occasion, is back with a vengeance this winter. Am about to replace front hub assembly hoping that's it, but it a shot in the dark to be truthful. Anyone out there find out what is causing this noise yet?

The transmission output shaft seal (front 4 wheel drive shaft) drove me crazy!
