I own 2 identical 2000 Cherokee Sports in red and black- One has 215,000, one has 115,000. My two teenage daughters drive them. I have fixed many of the problems described in the hundreds of posts myself- a well below average mechanic with limited time and skills. Parts are plentiful and cheap. They don't flip like Liberty's and do well above average in a collision. They are very easy to drive- OK on gas and the engines and transmissions last forever. You can buy a good one for 3K and run it forever. I know of many with 300K on the original engine and transmission. A racing mechanic told me he loves the drivetrain durability on them. All cars have issues even rice burners- Google Honda Accord transmission issues.

We have recently purchased a 2000 Jeep Sport Cherokee. Love the thing, hate the squeal. Thought it was a vacuum leak. Nope, thought it was the transmission. Nope, think it is an alignment issue with the serpentine alignment. Either the tension, A/C compressor, fan, or crank pulley is out of alignment. Belt conditioner works every time, but very short term, 5-10 minute plan to replace tension pulley.

Thanks, Ideas?

I would replace the serpentine belt, or reposition it, it is on correctly, it needs to be centered.

And to the person who has trouble with his electric windows, per your comments I would check to see that you have the windows locked, there is a button under the window switches. Hit it one time to release.

I had belt noise on my 93 at times, and kept checking the tension and it was good. The problem turned out to be the position of the power steering pulley. It was not in perfect alignment with the nearby pulleys. It is positioned by a tight fit on the shaft of the power steering pump. Per the Haynes manual procedure, I used a couple of washers and a bolt to draw it onto the pump about 1/16 inch more (rearward). No more belt squeal. I had to remove the electric fan to do this.

I just read these posts in June, 2010. Someone in April, 2009 mentioned something about the driver's window motor. Do you think you could go back do that? Having serious problems. Thanks!

93 Cherokee Sport wheel wobble story. I went through almost everything; shocks, hub bearings, front axle position bar, steering damper. I had been running Goodyear Wranglers and found that when I went back to Sam's and had them re-balanced, the wobble was gone. For about one to three months.

This went on for a few years. I even had the Wranglers replaced, and due to a tire failure, 2 more replaced. After the tire failure I was worried and finally had expensive Michelin SUV tires put on. These tires had a more standard tread pattern to them. The wheel wobble was gone for four years completely. It is now slightly back on rare occasion brought on by certain rough roads. The old 93 just keeps running and running.

I recently picked up a 2001 and found the items listed on this post very helpful, and have fixed many items including the famous "no buss" with loss of instruments. The driver door speaker was simply the wire connector to speaker was corroded. I didn't need to go into the wiring. I think the Cherokee Sport is one of the most fantastic Jeeps made! Every car has problems, but this one is rugged and easy to drive.

Own a 99 Cherokee Sport 2 door, with 148,000 miles, love the beauty, runs like a deer.

Recently I noticed water getting under carpet, both sides, when it goes through car wash or hard rain. Changed the windshield, did not work, checked the AC drain, it is clean, replaced top part door molding, pulled the carpet, could not find where the water comes in. Any thought on this? Appreciate it.

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport.

Recently I had to replace a blown radiator. Every now and then my power steering will squeal like a stuck pig. Most recently, my gas gauge has randomly been dropping to totally empty, even though I have a full tank of gas.

Any ideas?

Well, it's official: (as official as official can be on a forum site) the 'Tap' method works to cure your key ignition problems. I was skeptical, but when I took a A1 sauce bottle to the key, it started right up. Obviously this problem needs to be fixed, but as a quick solution, it works great!

Yup, it's called the death wobble, Dodges get it a lot.. it's also on youtube.

I had the same problem and replaced the air filter: problem went away.

It sounds like the dealer is trying to rip you off; stay away.

Also, if you are overdue for an oil change, that might be causing the problem.

Look for the simplest solutions first.

I got gas from a new place for my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Smelled gas fumes, and noticed the gas gauge was really high. I thought that was why I smelled gas. Turns out the guy put the cap on wrong. This caused a check engine light for the last 2 days. I put the cap on properly, and I assume my two day problem has been resolved. Thanks for leading me down the right path on a post from 6 years ago!
