Hello Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo owners.
After reading the threads posted I am still having a problem with my 2001 JGCL tail lights. my brake and signal lights work but my actual tail lights don't work even when my head lights are off. I went through the steps someone left on here as to try and fix the problem myself but everything looks fine the ground has nothing around it and I did pry it up, my bulbs are not blown and everything is lined up correctly. can someone please help me with my problem? I went to the dealer and without looking he just told me to replace the lamps but if I am going to continue having this problem I don't want to buy the lamps because I want to know what the problem is.
Thanks.

Great site. Interesting that so many folks are having the same difficulties as I am with my 2000 Grand Cherokee. I replaced the left brake light assembly because that brake light was seldom working.
I have the problem with the left turn signal not working intermittently and found that when I flip on the left blinker and it doesn't work, I just toggle the flashers on and off and the turn signal then works.
I haven't addressed the growling door lock yet. Driver's side door needs to be unlocked by the remote, and then by key.
Latest problem is also electrical. Lose all power but the battery is strong. Gauges will all move in unison with the car off, even though lights, radio, etc. don't work and car won't start. It's been suggested it might be a bad ground, so that's this evening's chore - try to chase that down.
I have been having the same problems on my 2002 limited with my power windows, tailgate lock and brake lights. I have had two window motors replaced. How my tailgate lock will not open. We own other Chrysler products but this seems to be a Jeep issue. My guess there are thousands of other owners that have not see this site. If Jeep won't respond with a recall, maybe a class action suite is in order. Any Jeep owner lawyers out there?

I agree ^^ I have the same problem with my 2000 JGC in 2005 I replaced all of the actuator's in the door that makes the quacking noise now as of 2008 I have to replace the tail gate and the passanger back door costing me 460 bux. 288 for labor and 74 for the passanger back door actuator and 91 for the tail gate with out tax this is Bull Crap.
I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee and this evening for the first time discovered that my brake lights won't turn off - it's sitting in the garage right now with brake lights on! I'm worried that I'll wake up to a flat battery in the morning!
It would seem to be a circuitry problem - any ideas anyone? AR.
Same crap for me. Was taking care of the light problem myself for a while- cleaning the connections, making sure the wires are not corroded but I've been pulled over too many times now and I can't seem to get to the root of the problem. Took it to a garage and they told me it was in the light switch itself. So had that replaced, still... same problem...then they told me it was in the tail light... They wanted 150 buck a light...hell, I can get that online for 70 a light so that is where I am right know. Seems to me there is more to it though. There has to be a short somewhere so I'm going to grin and bear it and take it to the dealer. Since there are so many complaints about this, I would think they would know how to fix it without having to even trouble-shoot it. Already I'm 400 bucks in the hole and still have the same problem.
Never again will I ever buy a Jeep!
And this is just one of the many problems I've had.
Drive shaft replaced
Calipers
Rotors
Fan assembly
Evaporator
Trans rebuilt
Rear end replaced
Door locks
Window assembly
Air flow door under the dash
Now the tail light issue
Water pump
The sad part about this is that it is still cheaper to fix it, than to buy a new car, so I'll suck it up and keep driving.
Oh... one more thing; It really sucks the gas as well.
I bought a 2000 GJCL a few months ago and experienced the same quacking locks and rotor issues. I replaced the rotors and so far so good but am still having issues with a clicking sound coming from the pass. front caliper and can't figure it out any ideas? Also it seems to shift kinda hard when going into second (auto). Thank god for this site as it has opened my eyes to possible problems and remedies.
This is the corrective method for your brake lights not working when your headlights are on (2000 Jeep GrandCherokee).
1) The cause of the problem is heat from the bulb.
2) Remove the light assembly as if you were going to change a bulb.
3) Turn the socket and remove it from the taillight assembly and set it aside (check to be sure your bulb is not burnt out).
4) Look at the opening, you will see 3 flat chrome colored contacts on the assembly.
5) Notice the one by it self at the top of the opening, that is the “ground”.
6) If you look closely you will notice the plastic around the ground contact has shrunk a little bit, this caused the contact to pull away from the socket, causing the problem.
7) With a small flat head screwdriver, VERY GENTLY pry up the contact so it stays slightly upward by itself.
8) Re-insert the bulb assembly back into the housing and press your brake petal with your lights on.
9) You should be in good to go!
10) Tools: Phillips head screwdriver and a small flat head screwdriver.
11) Time : 5 minutes per light.
This site is very helpful to consumers...Thanks.
99 GC Laredo with 88k miles (I know I know, I baby it). I've had a host of problems similar to others: blown tweeters (2003), fried actuators (2003 and 2006), drivers side window regulator (2007 and 2008), water pump at 40k, tail light issues (actually fixed with a 15$ replacement socket from Jeep), CD changer that crapped out back in '03.
Lots of annoyances, but I always figured I'd take the little nuisances instead of drive train problems. Now I've got a new issue: the fan won't kick off after I turn the car off. I'm not talking about 2 minutes on a hot day, I mean it went for a good 45 minutes before I just disconnected the battery. I replaced the coolant sensor (25$, pretty easy) but still have the same problem. I'm thinking about replacing the fan relay switch, but it is a bear to get to. Anyone had a similar issue?
Shoot me a line at kluwec (at) gmail (dot) com.
I just bought a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the same problems I have read about - the bad rear brake light, the quacking from the rear lift door, and the blown front tweeter... I have some idea of how to get to the right parts to fix those issues now, so thanks to everyone for the help.
I have one other issue that I haven't seen yet - my A/C just cuts off randomly. It will be on for a while and then the light on the A/C button turns off along with the cold air! I can turn it to defrost and the A/C will come back on, but the A/C doesn't always come back on. Does anyone know how to fix this or what I should be looking for???
Any advice would help!
Thanks,

We have had our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 6 years now and it has given us ALL of the problem you have already reported so far.
Thank goodness for the internet and this site as it has helped me tremendously.
So far we have had the rear axle seals replaced at the dealer as I wasn't about to get mixed up in that battle.
The left rear brake light issue was fixed with some new sockets. Left Front, Right Front and Right Rear Window regulators were replaced with new from Directauto.com which has the best price I have found and also a lifetime warranty. The Left Rear door lock mechanism is making the quack quack sound as we speak and the brakes need to be fixed. We also have to crank it twice to get it to start but I can tell you one thing.
I will NEVER EVER recommend or purchase another product from this manufacturer.
Good luck to all, and to the person or persons that started this site, I thank you.
Thanks for the site and the info. I have a 2000 GCL that we purchased new in January 2000. Has 72,200 miles on it. Had the problem with the original front rotors and paid the dealer to turn them. Had them replaced with after market at 42,000. SATIFIED Brand. Also, I put on Bilstein shocks. Extended warranty replacement of LF door mechanisn, Master switch on the door and hood lifts. Also, seal on front axle.
This week I was informed of the lack of brake lights. I did the lift of the contact fix and inserted some short lengths of solder under LH AND RH. So far, so good. It looks like one could insert a wedge between the top ring and the one below it, to raise the top ring up to where it should be. We live in Arizona, so heat could be a factor.
Rear pinion seal was replaced last month, as it was leaking on the garage floor.
This site is worth its weight in platinum. Thanks for making it available.
First I'd like to mention how much I appreciate the time everyone has put into this site. It is great to be able to go someplace legitimate and read other people's issues and fixes. Thanks!
Moving on, I've owned my 2000 JG-CL for 5 years now. I purchased it in fall/winter of 2003, 3 years old with under 20,000 miles on it. It has bout 75,000ish miles currently. I absolutely love my Jeep and have wanted one for a long time.
While I have not experienced all the issues mentioned on this site, I have experienced the following:
Left Tail Light - which seems okay after new assembly
Ticking Sound - sounds like coming from drivers side front wheel area recently started.
Starting Vehicle - It does not start right away; I have to hold the key in starting position for at least 5 seconds before releasing it.
Flashing Lights On/Off - Inside and Out... mostly inside. Dashboard lights, blinkers, interior lights and the headlights. This is the one that boggles my mind.
Has anyone had a problem with their lights flashing on and off? The last time I remember this happening, I finally had to replace a dead battery. The strange part of it, the battery was replaced only about a year prior. The lights are flashing again, and oddly enough it's been almost a year or so since I replaced the battery. Even more odd, I had the vehicle 3 years before I had to replace the first battery. Since then, it seems every year I need a new one. Something doesn't seem right to me...
So again, if anyone out there has experienced the flashing lights and have found a fix, please comment when you have some time.
Regards to all JG-CL owners! :-)
I have a 2002 Jeep Laredo with cloudy headlights, any suggestions on how to clean them, I have been told that my seals are broken and I need to replace them. Has anyone else had this problem?
