On quacking tailgate locks. I found the offending piece and very quickly removed it (though you have to leave a piece in the locking mechanism - otherwise your locked out).

Has anyone found where to buy a replacement (just for the actuator)?

Hello,

I too have had the same issues with my 2000 Jeep GC Laredo. Faulty tailights, warped rotors, water pump seal and door lock actuators. First the front drivers door about 4 years ago when my jeep had about 25,000 miles. Now recently my front passenger door and rear lift gate have seemed to catch the virus. I replaced the drivers side on my own and plan to do the same with the others. Not very hard or time consuming, but I really thought my Jeep was a lemon. I am amazed these are such common problems and Jeep hasn't done anything about it.

I have a 1999 Jeep GC with braking issues. They work fine, but while driving I will brake and come to a stop, but when I release the brake pedal the brakes remain locked (front brakes). They will remain locked and I will have to pull over, sometimes they will release in a few minutes, other times I have to have it towed... No one seems to know the problem.

I've taken it to three different places... each one with a different fix, each fix costing me $500, but none of them can say it will fix the problem. I have to do something, but what? I have a funny feeling I will end up replacing the entire braking system, from pads, rotors, lines to master cylinder... costing me time and big money... has anyone else had this problem?

I have a brake light out also. I am having trouble getting the bulb out to replace. I remove the 2 screws, but I cannot get the assembly loose to replace the bulb. Can someone please explain how to get the assembly loose so I can replace the bulb?

To the comment 2 above... the problem is the calipers... our Neon did it because after 210,000 miles of use they just gave out and began to stick... for the guy with the light screw problem... i would go to www.dodgeforum.com and go to the Jeep section and ask them...

Regarding the issue of the tail light going out when you press the brake pedal, whoever responded on the first page mentioning the plastic ring cracking has it right. At least in my case. I also recently had the same problem and found that the plastic ring where the bulb twists into was cracked and therefore was not making a ground connection. I used a little "cheapo engineering" and put some aluminum foil around the small metal lead which solved the problem for a few months. However, the problem is back. Think it's probably time to just replace the whole assembly. I've priced them online and have found them as low as around $60. If your tail light is experiencing this problem, remove the top bulb socket and take a look inside the light assembly to see if the plastic ring is cracked or separated. This could be due to just fatigue from the constant pressure of the bulb socket, or in some cases from replacing the bulb incorrectly and pressing, snapping it off from twisting it in. Those little buggers are a real pain in the butt to get in and out sometimes! Anyway, good luck!

I have a 1999 Jeep Laredo. My key won't turn most of the time when I try to start the vehicle. However, when I have been in the store parking lot for more than 45 minutes trying to get home it does turn and start right up. This is the same for both keys. I pull on the steering wheel when the wheels are locked, but that is not the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a Grand Cherokee Laredo 2000 and have had trouble with the lift-gate duct. what I found out was when I took it a part is that there is a little sprocket that is connected to a shaft which operates a little slide mechanism. the sprocket breaks away from the shaft which causes the noise. the sprocket is turned by a small motor which is connected to another sprocket, which turns the sprocket with the shaft. If you can find a way to secure the sprocket back to the shaft you can fix the thing your self. The only problem is that it is hard to get apart. I used a dremiel tool and cut the top off going along the seam. Be careful not to cut through the little shaft that sticks out. Just Info...

Hi all. The problems with the warping rotors are usually due to the vehicle having the problematic Teves calipers. These are single piston calipers which are of poor quality and undersized to handle the excess weight of the JGC. The only permanent fix to this is to replace the calipers with the Akebono dual-piston calipers. This will permanently fix your warped rotor issues. You can find both calipers at autopartswarehouse.com. You can also tell what type you currently have by checking the caliper color - the Akebono will be silver, the Teves will be black. Good luck!

As a technician who sees many makes and models, I have yet to see a vehicle built, since asbestos was removed from the pad material because of health issues and replaced with high metal content, whose rotors last. It's now common to replace rotors.

WOW! I am amazed as to how many comments there are about the 2000 JGC Lerado's having door lock problems. I bought my jeep used two years ago. The locks were fine. Then when hitting my automatic key chain lock I heard the duck noise... didn't think anything of it for several weeks and then finally realized that my back driver side door was not locking with the power lock button in the jeep or on my key chain... so I have to lock it manually. Then about 6 months ago my passenger front door locks, but you can't open it from the outside... only from the inside (PAIN when my fiance' is trying to open the door for me when we're going out -ha ha). Then this last July... after a weekend camping trip.. jeep full to the rim in the back - now my back hatch won't open!! I just saw a post where I can crawl in the back lift up a tiny plastic cover from the inside to open the liftgate. Umm...don't think this will be helpful or convenient so I'll pass... but thinks for the hint if I do need to get back there for something. WHY the heck did jeep not put a freaking key hole on the back hatch OR any of the other doors, but the driver door? I sure hope no murderer is chasing me and the closest door is the passenger side... cause I won't be able to get in!!! Anyway - it's nice to know I'm not the only one with the problem. I'll check out all of the helpful sites you all have mentioned. Thanks again and good luck to the rest of you!!

You know, my least favorite character on loony tunes was always Daffy Duck. Now almost every time I lock my doors with the remote or front controls, I hear him quacking away at me with determination. This is the second time this has happened to me. About a year or so ago, my left rear passenger door had the problem. Today, while I was on my lunch break from work, I got out of the car and *QUACK!*... this time it's the right rear passenger door. I'm horrible with self-maintenance on vehicles... the only thing I'm not afraid to strip apart and rebuild is a computer or other electronic device.

Although, when comparing costs I think it may be worth the try. I'll look through the aforementioned websites & suggestions later this evening when I have time. I'll be sure to post my success if any methods are pursued.

By the way, I own a 2000 JGC Laredo Limited Ed. Great vehicle... annoying electrical problems.

Another problem I've had since I purchased the car is my interior panel or "trim" on the driver's side door keeps disconnecting itself (not entirely) from those retaining screws or clips (the white things, whatever they're called). It seems most of the time as though only half of them are still connected (the ones closer towards the door hinge). I had the dealer fix it twice - way back when, before I'd even considered visiting Google. They claimed to have replaced the retainers - but now I doubt it. Would removing the panel and installing completely new retainers fix this issue? Thanks.

Amazing!!! I am happy that I found this place. I have been experiencing problems with my 2001 GC Laredo for several years. Last week, I was pulled over by a local Sheriff's Deputy for having my tail lights out. I had no idea there was a problem. A year ago, my right light went out and replaced both. So, I wrote it off as a fix. Wrong. I have been hearing the buzzing sound when using my locks for about two years. My liftgate froze several months ago and I have not been able to open it. I had the same problem with a 1997 GC Laredo, but I was able to overcome the remote lock with a key lock. Low and behold, no key hole on the 2001. What was D/C thinking? Anyway, I look forward to trying the information shared at this site. I will be sure to let you know how it turned out.

I too have the door lock problems with my 2000 GCL, and now I am really in a bind. I had the passenger door luck repaired under warranty after it started quacking a few years ago. Now my driver door has been doing it. Within the past few weeks, I have had to use the key and remote to unlock my driver door. The remote will not unlock it completely, and I cannot unlock it with the key unless I press the remote first. The key will not turn unless I hit the remote. So I have to use the remote AND key to get in. My big problem today is that my battery (in the car, not the remote) is completely dead. So dead, that the actuators won't even move. Of course my Jeep is locked. I can't get in it! Thanks Chrysler! Who was the genius who decided to put one keyhole on the vehicle.

I have tried everything I can think of to break in. I went under it and tried to access the alternator with a wire connected to another battery thinking I could get power to the system some how enough to unlock the car. I have tried popping the hood latch with a screw driver through the grille. I either have to get my door unlocked or get my hood popped somehow. Anyone with any suggestions. My jeep is stuck at my friend's house for now. I guess if all else fails I am gonna have to through a brick through a window.

Please email me at bdimsdale@sc.rr.com if anyone has any helpful info. Thanks!

Another problem I have is that if I leave my lights in AUTO mode, the randomly blink on and off through out the night. They only stay on for 3-4 seconds then turn off. 5 minutes may go by or hours may go by before it does it again. It is completely random. But they never stay on for more than 3-4 seconds. I was freaked out when I discovered this. Thought someone was in my car one night, and my girlfriend thought I was insane until she saw it for herself. Anyone else had this problem?

I have a 2000 GC laredo with the same "phantom" light problem, they go on and off at night for no reason and also my brake lights are crazy, they never work when the driving lights are on, I tried replacing fuses and they keep burning out! I also have a frozen left rear door! how do you fix the 1. headlight issue 2. taillight issue and 3. stuck door issue? I am going crazy!!
