Hello to all.
I own a 99 Jeep TJ and here is my story. In September 2007, piston number 1 blew up and found itself in the bottom of the oil pan in a million pieces just like corn flakes.
After installing a rebuilt engin, I decided to also fix my horn problem. My horn still does not work, but here is what happened after.
My Jeep started to sputter at 2000 rpm and it would engage and disengage the lock-up system of the transmission at the same time. NO mechanics could find the problem. Replaced spark plugs, wirering, rotor, distributor cap, 2 TPS and the problem is stil there. After a few months in and out of garages, my transmission finaly blew up. Lockup system broken.
All this started after my motor replacement so after reading about the clockspring, I will try to replace it and see if it fixes the problem. I read on the internet that the TPS is grounded through the clockspring.
Thanks to all your post.

I'm having the same mysterious problems with my '98 automatic jeep wrangler sahara. Randomly, the gauges all go off and the airbag light comes on. Also, when I slow down, idle, or stop it shudders and apparently slips out of gear, then jerks into gear when I accelerate. I have been told it might be one of the vacuum hoses, but I have no idea how to fix the problem. Have tried transmission flush, as well as transmission additives to no avail, leading me to believe it is definitely not the transmission.
Hey Everyone!
So I have a 97 SE Wrangler with many of the same electrical problems. Only mine is every time I start it the windshield wipers will come on. Sometimes they stay on for just a minute, other times they won't TURN OFF! Its so annoying! Also I get the problem with LH turn signal indicator turning on and staying on for no reason. WTF? Any advice?
I have an '03 Sahara... My speedometer and my cruise control quit working and was told to replace my sensors. Located in the Transmission I have two sensors one is an "ingoing" and one is an "outgoing", I replaced them both, my engine light is still on and still no speedometer. Is there a reset button somewhere? If anyone knows and answer... email me at dmark@enfd.com. and type in sahara on the subject page. THANKS!!
I have a 1997 TJ and have I believe electrical ignition problems, I have the same symptoms as many of the above have, Instrument Cluster gages, most notably, volt meter and tachometer go dead and the engine shuts off, this happens very rapidly like a micro switch or relay opening and closing rapidly, causing the engine to stop and start rapidly causing a very jerky driving experience. This may go on for 30 seconds to a few minutes and then it seems to settle down and run fine for a few hours and then start again. I have came to a complete stop a couple of times but have managaged to start the engine again. I have checked all the electrical connections and they seem fine, I also have switched relays in the PDC, I have checked the connections at the CPU. This problem only affects the ignition as all other electrical areas work, eg: radio, lights, power ports etc. and there is no power fluctuation to these other areas when the problem occurs. Any help with this problem would greatly be appreciated, email ralphgs98@hotmail.com.
I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler Sport with what else?...electrical problems. When the problems first started it was only the radio going on and off when the windshield wiper ran across the window, or when the blinkers blinked. As it got worse, the radio would go off when I turned it up too high.
Now, and probably for the last couple of years, the radio just flickers on occasion or doesn't come on at all. Wipers and blinkers work fine as they always have, but radio has been rendered worthless.
I will likely try the steering column remedy mentioned in these posts, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hey there jeepers, I bought a 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. It had 76000 miles on it. I know that's a lot of miles, but I always wanted one.
Here's the deal on mine; the idle is off and the fuel sending unit works when it wants to, my fog lights stay on, and the 4wd light says part time 4wd.
So took it the Jeep dealer; they said change the TPS & the crank sensor. As far as the fog lights, they said to change the the whole switch.
I am doing a lot of the work myself, so does anybody know how to replace the crank sensor or anything about the 4wd light.

Thankyou happy trails.

OK, so here it is. "Electrical stuff" my friends laugh as we are driving down the street and my gages go off and my "air bag" light comes on, and I slap the dash!!!
I am a true Jeep nut, therefore I don't really care to smack it around some. My question would be has it "ever" caused a fire?
I have been very fortunate and have not had to spend a lot of cash on it, just a few things here and their.
Why is the Chrysler Company using that sludge?
My wife has a 1998 Jeep Sahara. It is always garage kept, has 32,000 miles and she services it regularly. For years we have had the dash instrumnents periodically go off. Then they would come back on. We took it to the dealer. We had the wiring harness replaced TWICE. The problem persists. Now the instruments are always off. The old dealer went out of business. We called the new dealer and he has no ideas!! We don't want to pay around $97/hour for them to look at it. If anyone has the solution, please, please email me.

Hey jeepers, I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and I too am having electrical problems. Recently my radio, windshield wipers, and turn signals stopped working at times. I tried jiggling my keys in the ignition and they would come back on, but it is hit or miss every time I turn on my Jeep. I can't even get it to come on now. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and I get the no fuse display on the odometer, and my radio and dome light do not come on. I have replaced all fuses under the hood and behind glove box fuse boxes, I have also replace the IOD, what now?
1997 Jeep Wrangler electrical problems or ignition?
We can start the Jeep up, and the minute we put it in gear (it's automatic) the #11 fuse blows and engine dies, as well as the instrument gauges. It then just cranks over, but doesn't start.
We put another fuse in; it did the same thing and blew it. We can some times replace the #11 and start it, then the same fuse blows again. We don't know where to star looking for the problem or what would cause this. If anyone knows, please let us know email: bethannstarkey@yahoo.com
I have a 1993 Jeep Wrangler. I am having charging problems. I was driving home the other night and the volt meter dropped. I replaced the alternator. Started driving again and it happened again. I replaced the fuse and it keeps blowing the fuse. I checked for a short in the wire and I cannot find one. Can I bypass the fuse box and run a wire from the alternator with an in line fuse to the battery?

I am a longtime ASE cert. tech and I bought mine with 1 1/2 miles on it brand new in May of 1996. At 100 miles I started using Mobil 1 oil, the engine is still shiny inside!!
It now has over 151,000 miles on it and I have had all the electrical problems everyone else has had. The wipers quit working suddenly about 75k, when I disassembled the motor I found broken pieces of the permanent magnet loose inside. Make sure your wipers are always shut off and parked when leaving the Jeep in freezing weather. I removed the broken magnet parts and all is still fine.
As to the gauges, radio, and all the other lights intermittently not working, it is powered by a 7.5 amp fuse in the fuse panel under the hood. tracing the wires to the inside of my Jeep. I found that somewhere in the harness there is an open circuit. Not wanting to tackle removing it and cutting it apart, since I have factory A/C, I pulled the radio out and jumped across from the fuse panel behind the glove box and installed an inline fuse with a wire from an unused accessory terminal to the memory wire on the radio, which also powers the cluster memory. That took care of that problem. Thank you Chrysler for crosswiring.
The stalling on cold take off and restarts was caused by the front O2 sensor.
The heater inside it was bad. I replaced it and I am back up to 22 MPG.
It is on it's 3rd radiator now, I installed an all metal 3 core for a 1979 CJ7 V8 and haven't had any leaks in 5 years.
Also, if you want a 20 gal. gas tank, drop it down and shorten the hoses inside on the filler by 3".
Mine has been good to me, just a few minor problems and it has a lot more miles left in it.
Hi - I have a 2001 Wrangler Sport with almost 90,000 miles on it.
I was driving home yesterday and noticed smoke coming out of the steering column along with my fog light sensor on. I was close to home so I kept going. When I pulled in the garage, I turned the Jeep off, took the keys out, and my fog light sensor still stayed on. I made sure they weren't on, but couldn't get the sensor light to go out. It finally went out. My lights and brights still work, along with my turn signals, and I didn't think to check the horn, but my fog lights don't work.
Can this be fixed with a simple fuse change, or is there now a problem with the steering column, because the smoke really worried me? It wasn't smoking this morning when I drove it into work. I'm a worrier, so I'm hoping my poor little Jeep doesn't burst into flames, but I don't want to take it to the dealership and I don't know a good mechanic. Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate them. Thanks!
