2001 Kia Carens LX 1.8 petrol from Malawi

Summary:

A car like this should be withdrawn from the market, and refunds made to the unfortunate buyers

Faults:

The car cannot work months without a fault.

I have practically changed every part, including head cylinder and master brake, absorbers and spiral rings, engine mounting etc! I'm always at the garage.

Now I am dealing with a gear problem.

I regret ever buying it, because I have spent more money than the cost of the car.

General Comments:

The car is very beautiful, but highly fragile.

Door handles for instance, are made of plastic, not steel.

Parts are scarce and expensive.

I never enjoyed it.

2001 Kia Carens LX 1.8 from Singapore

Summary:

Bargain car, and performances like it

Faults:

Rust spots appearing on the back door (5th). ACtually water gets trapped quite nicely there.

General Comments:

Grossly underpowered, and major struggle uphill.

Ergonomics is quite off; search for horn button.

Major struggle to get in and off third row as the controls seems to be on the wrong side. If you stop at the kerb side, the driver has to come out and hit the release lever!

2001 Kia Carens LS 1.8 from Singapore

Summary:

A good bargain for a superb street-performer

Faults:

Nothing, except the explained noises:

Transmission sometimes gives throbbing sound when put to 'D" and at rest.

Air-con sometimes sounds like a washing machine.

General Comments:

Superb road holding and driveability for a MPV.

Superb value for the money spent.

Not enough torque when moving off in traffic.

2001 Kia Carens LX 1.8 petrol from Singapore

Summary:

A comfortable car if we drive normally and do not push the car too hard

Faults:

Water leakage and spare wheel was submerged in a 1/4 inch of water when I first received the car. Carpet damp and corrosion evident in a few areas.

After 6400 km the auto-gear box makes a throbbing noise when in gear and idling at a traffic stop. Switch to neutral and the noise goes away.

General Comments:

A bit under power when starting from a standstill, or when accelerating from 20 km to 45km.

Poor pre-delivery inspection and issue resolution, with the agent being slow.

Gearbox is not lasting.

2001 Kia Carens GLX 1.8 from Singapore

Summary:

A good bargain for a MPV with the feel of a sedan

Faults:

Nothing, except the following poor fitting:

1. The gear shifting gives a very loud metal clattering sound around 2500rpm.

2. Engine noise is too audible for comfort when going over 2500rpm.

3. Removing the back row seats required machinery to remove the screws.

4. The air-conditioning started to give audible noise after 1.5 months of use.

General Comments:

It is the cheapest mini-MPV available in Singapore and I suggest people who are looking for their first MPV should consider the Kia Carens. Although the price is cheap, nothing is cheap on its finishing and performance.

The thing I like best about the car is its road performance on cornering and lane switching at high speed. It beats the 2 other mini-MPVs i.e. Zafira and Premacy, I have tried.

I like everything with the car except the fuel consumption which is exceptionally high. The mileage is currently at 3500km and I get a average of 7-8km/l. This is considerably low when compared to the report of 10.6km/l for city driving, 11.8km/l for combined and 13.6km/l on highway. I wonder what are the parameters based on in compiling such report? I would like to find out from other owner's comments on the fuel consumption.
