2014 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE 3.0 turbo diesel from Cyprus
Summary:
Practical, safe, with lots of quality equipment
Faults:
Timing chains tend to stretch and wear out, causing knocking or clicking noises. If they break, they cause catastrophic damage to the valves and pistons.
The sequential system (with a primary and secondary turbocharger) suffers from certain oil leaks or actuator failures, which reduces power and can generate excessive smoke.
The air intake hoses crack and lose pressure (air leaks).
The oil must be changed at least every 10,000 km, otherwise the flow to the crankshaft bearings may be obstructed.
General Comments:
It offers seven spacious seats, good fuel economy, numerous features, a large towing capacity of 3,500 kg, and excellent off-road capability. The eight-speed automatic transmission helps the 3-liter, 183 kW/600 Nm twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine move the bulky 2.5-ton body.
One of the features of the PSA/Ford V6 engine in this Land Rover is the five-level terrain assist mode, which adjusts the engine, transmission, and brakes according to the road conditions selected by the driver.
The electronic air suspension allows for a ground clearance of between 185 mm and 310 mm and reduces body roll on asphalt. In terms of safety, it includes eight airbags, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, heated side mirrors, bi-xenon headlights, and electronic driver assistance systems such as rollover mitigation, stability control, hill descent control, hill start assist, and traction and stability control.
The spare tire is full-size. However, ride comfort and handling are top-notch. The electronic air suspension is complex and not as durable as steel springs, but these drawbacks are offset by advantages such as cornering stability, the ability to raise the vehicle for off-road driving, its indifference to speed bumps, and the smooth ride it provides.
The steering has a high gear ratio, requiring more turns of the wheel (typical of 4x4 vehicles), but the power distribution is nearly perfect. It's surprisingly easy to park. On rough terrain, it performs best with tire pressure around 18 psi and the suspension raised. In that case, combined with the low-range transfer case and the ability to select terrain conditions in the Terrain Response program, it becomes virtually unstoppable.
If I had to highlight positive and negative aspects, among the former I would mention the smooth and pleasant air suspension, many accessories, beautiful cabin, reasonable power, and light steering.
The biggest downside is that it consumes a lot of fuel in the city; although it's easy to drive, I would recommend not using this type of vehicle too much for urban journeys.
