I'm an EX REME Mechanic and I'd just like to comment on a couple of things.
1 Rust. In my 9 years as a serving VM I never once ever saw a rusty land rover. This is probalby in part to the undercoating ours had along with the constant care they received. IE cleaning after expecises etc.
2. We never had problems with damp starting and I've had land rovers inside the artic circle and in the sahara desert, they always performed brilliantly.
I wish to add to the comment regarding damp starting. Having driven mine in extremely harsh conditions and deep wading (where the fan blades have sprayed the distributor and engine with water) and not experienced any trouble running and starting, I would suggest that this is not a common fault. Perhaps a new HT leads, a refurb dizzy or electronic points might be the order of the day.
