1990 Lexus LS 400 4.0L V8 from North America

Summary:

Super comfortable

Faults:

(Jan. 2011) 200,000 when acquired, temp gauge didn't work and right lower control arm bushing are worn and make a noise when driving over bumps. A/C is not cold.

General Comments:

Very comfortable.

Very roomy (front and rear).

Very strong acceleration.

Very reliable so far.

Very heavy car, so don't expect it to handle the corners like a Corvette.

1990 Lexus LS 400 4ltr petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Best luxury saloon car ever built for that era and even outshines today's competitors

Faults:

The water pump failed at 131000. The alternator failed because the power steering pump leaked onto it.

General Comments:

This is a great car in every respect, and still runs like the day it left the showroom 14 years ago.

1990 Lexus LS 400 from North America

Summary:

Fantastic car. Highly recommended

Faults:

The AC needed to be fixed a couple of years after buying the car. Power steering had to be fixed. The brakes had to be fixed also, but it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Nothing major.

General Comments:

Awesome, reliable, and dependable car. This is probably the best car I've owned. Even though it's a 1990, it runs brand new. The ride is smooth, though not as luxurious as my lincoln town car.

1990 Lexus LS 400 from North America

Summary:

Holy cow! Bulletproof!

Faults:

Air conditioning galore! The pump several times, freon leaks out all the time, etc.

Display above the radio, LCD cracked went black.

Drivers seat won't go back straight, so it wants to dump you to the right or you have to recline back a ways to straighten out.

Alternator.

Radiator.

General wear and tear.

General Comments:

Despite all these problems at 250,000 the car's motor and transmission are going strong! I wouldn't hesitate taking this car on a long trip.

I would worry about the A/C or other devices (alternator, radiator, etc.) but I wouldn't worry about the motor or transmission.

I wonder if the motor will ever quit. It drives as smooth as new. Relative we bought it from complains that their new RX300 isn't as smooth as this car is in condition.

1990 Lexus LS 400 4l V8 from North America

Summary:

Doesn't get any better in this price range

Faults:

Power steering leaks.

Climate control display blacked out.

General Comments:

If you know about luxury cars, you probably already know how nice this car is. If you haven't owned a car of this caliber before, and are considering one, this is as good as it gets. You will love owning this car. If you are concerned about repair costs, but still want a luxury car, pick up a well maintained ls400. Yes, it has a few problems, and they are expensive to fix if you can't do the labor yourself. There are several small things that go wrong, but the big one is power steering/rack & pinion related failures. The rack & pinion replacement is something you do not want to pay for unless you are performing the labor, and are resourceful in your parts hunting. The air control valve on the power steering pump will eventually go bad. When it does, your car will smoke after its been sitting a couple of hours, and the power steering fluid will drop. The high pressure line is also prone to leakage. If you have any power steering leaks, make sure it is not dripping onto the alternator, or you will be buying one of those too. They run about 400 from the dealer, and about 150 on ebay. Treat yourself, buy one of these. Save money by working on it yourself. There are Lexus forums online for help, Lexus Owners Club is the best.

1990 Lexus LS 400 4.0 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

The greatest car I have ever owned

Faults:

Very little power steering leakage - bought it unknowingly.

Little cracked coolant reservoir - bought it unknowingly.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever had.

Why?

It runs smoothly, has great power, no noise from the inside of the car.

If I want to race and beat the other drivers, just switching to a power mode can beat most of the cars on the road.

When climbing a very steep hill, it goes normal without much of extra effort, and most amazingly, it does not lose the speed!!

Seats are comfortable and the back seats are the best.

The interior and exterior looks great. I bought this car from a 78 year old Spanish gentleman and he kept it so well.

I just had it serviced from Lexus dealer in Canberra and they were very helpful. The service was great and I could feel it as soon as I started the car. (15000k was too much without a service.)

The 7 speaker sound system is great to listen to music, although I would not mind a sub.

At the end of the day, I am very happy with this car, and whenever I go back to the car, I feel happy that I own it.
