2002 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Elegance 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Versatility with a slightly hard ride..

Faults:

Sticky passenger side electric window. This was quickly rectified by the dealer.

Service counter failed and required resetting. This is irritating as we no longer are able to identify accurately the next service required. Interestingly, the same thing happened to my parents A-class at about the same mileage (5000)

General Comments:

We bought the car as an exdemonstrator from Exeter (with 1,400 miles). Their service was excellent and their after sales care (via their Taunton satellite) has been superb. Large discounts can be achieved this way and we had a reduction of nearly £3000 for 1,400 miles! The guarantee was transferred and we also received mobilo-life cover. Check the Mercedes website for lists of exdemo. cars at dealers.

The car is wonderfully versatile and suits our needs as a city car during the week and a get away vehicle for the weekends brilliantly. The standard of equipment in the Elegance is excellent and I would recommend paying the extra for tat little bit of luxury. The classic I hired on holiday recently was rather basic.

Like those before me, I have to comment on the ride which is particularly harsh. Whilst this is a minor concern in day-to-day driving, and won't be noticed on motorway runs, it does make me wonder whether the thing is going to shake itself to bits someday... I certainly wouldn't recommend this car for rough tracks and country lanes.

Finally, if you live in an area with lots of windy roads you might want to think again as the vision-obstructing pillars on the A-class make driving hairpin bends a new form of gambling!

In summary, great design, extremely versatile, but ride lets it down.

Update: May 2005.

The car has had rather a lot of problems:

1. New steering column

2. New rear suspension coils

3. Wiper failure

4. Very creaky windows

5. New engine!!! Yes - a new engine!

So, the verdict is that I'm not at all happy with the build quality and reliability of my A-class. I do still think that the design is great and the car does still meet my requirements. However, Mercedes clearly didn't get the engineering right. In fairness, they have sorted out each problem and bore the cost of the new engine despite the car just being out of warranty. So, their service is a plus point!
