1987 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 300 SDL Turbo 3.0 litre I6 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Mercedes quality at its best

Faults:

Nothing major to report so far; just regular oil changes every 3,000 miles.

General Comments:

No matter how much I drive it, it never lets me down. It is every bit as reliable as my old 300SD.

This car is very fast, too. It goes like a big gas V8 while returning a fuel range of 25-32 miles per gallon all year round!

As long as you keep your diesel exercised and maintained properly, they will run forever!

* Nothing beats a W126 Mercedes S-Class for quality; not a W220, nor even a W140 (I know, I've driven them both).

1987 Mercedes-Benz S-Class SEL 4.2 liter from North America

Summary:

This is a car in a class by it's self and is truly a great auto

Faults:

Electric window problem 150.00.

Muffler problem 180.00.

Replacing radio because it cannot hear thunder. 200.00.

General Comments:

This is my second Benz and I really love the ride and style of these fine cars. This car is CLASS and there is no doubt about that.

The cabin is so quite and the ride is smooth as glass.

The motor is very strong and you have to watch out or it can get away from you.

1987 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 560SEL V8 from North America

Summary:

A very powerful and reliable car

Faults:

Car does not shift from 1st to 2nd gear smoothly.

Exhaust system began to fall off around 210,000 miles, but the bands that hold it were replaced for $20.

Speaker wiring beginning to go bad.

Fuse for the power seats blew and the seats did not move.

Power locks don't work anymore.

Air conditioner vent for the back seats does not work anymore.

Panel for the windows/seats in the back seat was hanging off, but was glued back in.

General Comments:

Amazing engine, still pulls 0-60 in 7-8 seconds at 220,000 miles.

Front seats begin to feel uncomfortable after driving for a while.

Extremely reliable, I don't think this car will ever stop working.

I have friend who is thinking about selling his 1986 560SEL with 67,000 miles for $8k. It is in great shape. Is that a fair price?

I am looking for a 560 SEL with low miles.

One of the safest cars I have EVER owned, I was hit on the drivers side at 50 mph by a corolla and my Mercedes 560 got me home with no problem. Sadly I had to total it due to a gas tank rupture = (

As well as the above statement about the transmisson; All you needed to do is play with the vacuum control valve and it will shift beautiful!

The most pleasant ride. Smooth, comfortable and safe. Many of the 1987 cars wish to have such innovative features like ABS and airbag.

Make sure to have the timing chain replaced around 100,000 miles. The cost should be around $500. If you don't replace it, it's likely to skip a tooth and bend the valves, costing at least $5000 to repair. Check the maintenance records of a 420 with over 100k miles. Make sure the chain was replaced or prepare to have it done.
