1976 Mercury Cougar XR-7 400 from North America

Summary:

Love this car

Faults:

The timing chain went after 3 months. Carburetor went bad. But after 30 years something is going to go wrong sooner of later.

General Comments:

Great car. after just a few mods like duals and other mods it wakes up quite a bit. Also these cars handle a lot better than a lot of the big cars from the 70's and 80's.

1976 Mercury Cougar RX-7 5.8L V8 400 from North America

Summary:

Just owning the car is a rush

Faults:

The Drivers seat leather is wearing away.

The steering is very loose, but, tolerable.

The heating takes a bit to warm up, but it is a big engine.

General Comments:

I haven't driven it much, it was a hand-me-down from my dad. He just retired and bought himself a new Ford, and gave me the car.

I love it, the power, speed, and all the American steel surrounding me. Driving it is a rush. It only gets 14 miles to the gallon on average, and with the prices going up it is gonna kill me, but I just like owning a Ford for the most part.

A Cougar RX-7?

Does it have a rotary engine in it?

(car owner) oops! "XR-7" not "RX-7" it doesn't have a rotary engine.

1976 Mercury Cougar XR-7 5.9 351m from North America

Summary:

Like driving on a cloud

Faults:

The only thing I had ever go wrong on the car is alternator at 78,000 miles. Besides this no other problems with the car. It ran like a champ.

General Comments:

The Cougar had a little speed with the 351 modified long block engine. It handles like a boat with 3 and a 1/2 turns to either side. lovely car. I hit a deer with it and damaged the front end. I need to replace the whole end and is wondering if anybody has a front end for sale off a 1974-1978 Mercury Cougar. Thanks.

There are an awful lot of people out there who are spreading incorrect information about Cougars of this vintage. Allow me to straighten you out on this one, which by the way is a mistake being made over and over. 1974-1976 is one body style, and 1977-1979 is another body style. The engine choice's for 74-76 were 302/351w,351c,460. 77-79 were 351m/400. and a few stray 302/351w's. 77-79's were on the LTD-II/Thunderbird chassis. 74-76's were Gran Torino Elite/Cougar/Montego chassis. There were many other difference's as well, but I don't have time to go into them right now since I just happened upon this web site. Now, how do I know this information to be correct, because I just happen to be selling a mint condition, all original, all white, fully loaded, 33k 1976 Cougar XR7 which I have owned since day 1. Hope this information is of help.
