You get good information here: http://www.tccoa.com/

You can also google for "Ford engine codes". You should get a hit for a Wiki on Ford engines.

Good luck, and have fun with your car!

I had a 76 Cougar XR7. It had a full vinyl roof, because it had a factory power moon roof. It had honey comb mags and a 460. I changed the timing gears to 429 gears and the Motorcraft carb to a center pivot Holey 750cfm. Had to jet it down some, but it literally flew with these minor changes.

I would love to find another Cougar the same. It was the best car I ever owned.

I just picked up a pretty clean '76 Cougar XR7 that's all original with bucket seats and it has the 400 engine.

I have a '76 XR7 with the 400. It has been in the family since new, is all original, runs great, and is in great shape. I am wanting to make it more of a muscle car, and would like to see some pics for ideas. And also I am curious about cheap motor mods for more power, as well as the value of the car. Please email me any info or pics.

I ordered a 76 with a 460, it was a lot of engine, but I loved it. Also the big four tire manufactures were on strike, and I had to settle for what tires I could get.

I had a 76 XR7 with the 460, fully loaded with moon roof. Had it for 18 years. Cursed myself everyday since I sold it.

You could purchase a 1976 Cougar with a special order 351 Cleveland. I know because my uncle bought one the year he retired.

Your story is EXACTLY like mine. Same exact car. Mine was black. Selling it was worse mistake I ever made.
