1999 Mercury Cougar LX from North America

Summary:

Piece of junk money pit

Faults:

EVERYTHING has gone wrong with this car... it's a piece of junk!

I've had the alternator, starter, radiator, air flow sensor, heater core, blower, catalytic converter, head gasket and several other things replaced. If I were to put the car up for sale I can advertise it "Like New" since there's so many new things in it. The car has practically been completely re-built.

Not to mention that when it's really cold outside it refuses to start. Any temp below freezing and forget about it...

General Comments:

I terribly regret ever buying this car, I can't afford to keep it running anymore. I've had it towed at least 3 times a year every year that I've owned it.

I also have the whistling noise from my speakers, but I figured out that if you dim the dash lights the noise goes away. Or the alternative is to turn off the radio, this makes the noise go away too.

I had to go to Walmart a buy one of those cup holders that you wedge between the passenger seat and the middle console, because the cup holder that came with the car dumps drinks in my lap!!!

I would never wish this car on my worst enemy... I wish I found this site before I bought the stupid thing.

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5 Duratec from North America

Summary:

Euro inspired beauty

Faults:

Absolutely nothing. I got it in early 2007, and we're going into 2009 in a month and it has given me absolutely no problems. I've take very good care of the car with oil changes every 4,000 miles & new oil filter. I keep it clean and drive it right.

I had a SVT clutch, pressure plate and SVT flywheel put on about 2 months ago, but the car has a lot of mileage and it was still on the original clutch. Impressive. These Duratecs are very strong and tough.

General Comments:

Not another car looks quite like the Cougar, and you can see styling cues that are being borrowed from it TODAY. It's incredible.

Handling in the Cougar is where it shines, while the Duratec is plenty strong stock, the handling is where it's at. This car has been nothing but great to me, and when I do get a new car soon, I won't be getting rid of the Cougar...

1999 Mercury Cougar from North America

Summary:

Handles nicely, but has off and on problems

Faults:

I've had my 99 Cougar for a few years. Was bought with 60,000 miles. It now has around 80,000+ miles on it.

So far I had to get a new alternator, brakes, side mirrors, drivers side window, dash lights replaced, and key chip replaced. I still need to fix the sunroof. And the radio turns off and on sometimes.

Just today the transmission blew out. I've had so many off and on problems with this car. Not a stress free vehicle. And costly to fix.

General Comments:

Nice looking car. Handles well. Too many off and on problems.

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 from North America

Summary:

Love at first sight

Faults:

Well, I bought this car for $1500, and it needs some work. It needs basic things like shocks, struts, strut mounts, a new rim, and tie rod ends.

General Comments:

I absolutely love this car. The power for such an inexpensive sports car is great. The ride is comfortable and the seats/setup of the interior is great.

After my Dakota died, I wanted something sporty, that I could pass on to my son in 2 years for him to drive. Mine is great, and has tinted windows and a spoiler.

I do have a question though, on mine, you can turn the radio on when there is no key in the ignition. Does anyone else's do that?

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 from North America

Summary:

Bad :(

Faults:

My Cougar works fine until it gets 22 Degrees(F) or lower. The rpm will go up to 3000 when I first start it, then drop, and then go back up to 3000, then drop until I turn it off. But if I keep driving, it won't turn off unless I completely brake! (I used my college money on this car... Do you have any ideas I can do to fix it so I can sell it?

General Comments:

It's cute but that's all.
