1992 Mercury Topaz GL review from North America
"A lackadaisical, sluggish, boring, but roomier than my current car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The brakes are absolutely horrible, no matter how new the brakes are they squeak and sometimes grind and it takes some serious leg power to stop the car.
The car is the slowest I have ever driven. When going up a hill, it almost feels as if you might just roll back down when approaching the top. That is scary!
What is also scary, is when I need to make a quick left turn before oncoming traffic and the accelerator doesn't want to work or appears stuck.
The a/c compressor went out at 69,000 miles.
The battery cables corroded easily and often and the car wouldn't start until I cleaned them or replaced the cables.
The engine was very weak (despite that it was a V6) and had a lot of pinging after it warmed up which would also result in a loss of engine power.
This car ate through tires.
Motorized seat belts got stuck a lot.
Had recall on the ignition-- it could catch fire at any time and cause serious facial burns.
The temperature gage was always on the high end.
General comments?
This car was the slowest thing I have ever driven and anyone who says it had good power obviously doesn't have much experience driving other cars.
This car had a 3 liter V6 engine, but it felt like 4 cylinder 50 horsepower engine and that isn't an exaggeration.
I took excellent care of this car and so did the previous owner, so it should have been a better car. Obviously Ford just sucks!!
Only positive thing was that the engine was very quiet at stops and you couldn't tell that it was even on.
It got better gas mileage than the manufacturer specified. I did take good care of the pile of junk.
It is also pretty roomy.
Oh yeah, did I mention the heater didn't work?
It got repossessed before it could cause me any further problems.
