2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Rough ride, but a solid car

Faults:

Struts needed replaced per schedule, coil packs replaced sooner than scheduled, spark plugs and wires replaced per schedule.

Brake light on one side has a wiring issue and doesn't want to work, even with a new bulb.

Gas tank has a purge problem that makes it difficult to fill up. Dealer wants an insane amount for just the gas tank, so I didn't fix the problem. Fuel filler neck was replaced due to rust (Ohio climate) Sometimes, gas will spill back out of the gas cap. You have to go slowly to prevent this.

Transmission pan taken off and cleaned. No sign of any metal particulates. Shifts great.

Burns oil, because the oil was overfilled once, damaging the seals. Catalytic converter can't function properly because of the burning oil problem.

Will run forever, but would need valve seals replaced to truly meet emissions now.

Overall, a very rough ride, due to the suspension type used. You can't upgrade the parts. It's just not designed like a Cadillac for smooth riding. It gets good gas mileage at 25/26 for mixed driving.

General Comments:

Good car for the value.

Check for any signs of fluid by the tranny pan, because some people may have never changed the fluid, and the gasket will eventually leak. Tranny fluid doesn't really need changing either! The filter for the tranny on my vehicle was not serviceable, so you won't see it when you take off the pan.

Cruise control might not work on some vehicles. Mine sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

The factory radio should be replaced after 10 years if you still want to be able to read the clock on it.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant GLS GDi 2.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Decent, fairly reliable and comfortable

Faults:

Radiator leaked coolant; needed replacement.

Rear passenger side suspension spring needed to be replaced.

Lambda sensor was faulty, replaced with genuine part.

Suspension strut replaced.

Rust appeared on rear wheel arches.

Dent on rear boot, my fault.

Front passenger side headlight washers ripped off by a vandal.

General Comments:

Not the most economical car, but the mileage is decent.

Bodywork repairs can be expensive.

Very comfortable seats, especially on long journeys.

Electronic A/C and climate control system was very good at keeping the chill Scots winter out.

These cars didn't sell overly well, so it's easy to pick one up cheap due to steep depreciation. You get a car in the size class of an E Class Merc. for far cheaper prices, though it does not have the prestige value of a Merc. badge.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES 2.4L 4g64 from North America

Summary:

By far my second favorite car I've ever been in... Still doesn't beat a BMW, but close

Faults:

Timing belt snapped at 154,000 miles.

Tranny mounts are worn out.

General Comments:

Pretty quick for a 4 cylinder.

Attracts a lot of attention.

Small car, yet roomy cabin.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant ES V6 from North America

Summary:

This is a great car for a small family, or someone who wants a sporty 4 door

Faults:

I have had no major problems; some paint damage that was from me, and the owner from before left in the sun, and it was not waxed enough.

The A/C is not as good as I want, but I rarely use it.

General Comments:

I find the seats comfortable. I love them; they are low enough for me, so it feels like a sporty sedan.

I do some racing events like autocross, and she handles great, sticks to the road like nothing, and will out turn a Civic or Mustang.

Quick to speed, so if you have a heavy foot, then the car will give you a thrill, but not as much as a V8.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant GDI 2.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap, comfortable, reliable and exclusivity; what more do you want?

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

The GDI has a known fault with carbon build up, which is probably why the technology was ditched by Mitsubishi.

It, like my previous Galant GLS, was 100% reliable. The standard spec is impressive for the price you pay now, and the peace of mind of knowing that when you want to go somewhere, the Galant will get you there is worth more than what you will pay for the car. In 4 1/2 years of Galant ownership, I have not had a single breakdown, and I have just taken delivery of my 3rd Galant (V6 Sport).

A car is essential in my line of work, so reliability is of utmost importance, and I can't see me being swayed from them. Nothing else comes close for looks, performance, comfort and reliability for the money these cars are currently changing hands for.

Fuel economy does suffer in urban environments, but when you buy a car that only comes with a petrol engine, the basic being a 2 litre, you are not buying a car for economy anyway.
