1997 Nissan 200SX from North America

Summary:

Sporty but comfortable and reliable

Faults:

Paint chips off bumpers rather easily.

General Comments:

A good reliable car.

I thought it would have slightly more power, such as up hills. In all though, I am happy with the purchase.

I have taken 2 very long roads trips and they have both been very comfortable, easy, and cheap due to the good gas mileage.

1997 Nissan 200SX 2.0 turbo from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A pretend sport's car

Faults:

No mechanical problems with the vehicle in the short time I owned it.

General Comments:

A great engine let down by a and slow shifting gear box, especially when shifting between first and second gear.

Ordinary handling and even more ordinary brake's.

Pedal's are to small for anybody with feet over size ten.

1997 Nissan 200SX SE 1.4 liter from North America

Summary:

A sporty looking economy car

Faults:

About 6 months after owning the car, the dashboard lights would occasionally go out. After taking it to the dealer, then never really fixed anything, cause the problem happened again... lights would flicker and go out for a second. The problem eventually fixed itself and has been fine ever since!

General Comments:

For an economy car, I really like the styling (both interior and exterior). It could use a little more under the hood, but other than that, the 200 has everything I wanted in a car at the time I bought it in 1997. Keyless remote, sunroof, A/C, power windows/locks, CD/tape, and cruise.

Seats are comfortable and I still enjoy driving the car all over the place, even on long road trips. Not a ton of room inside, but enough that I have always been able to fit my stuff in the car.

1997 Nissan 200SX 2.0i 16v turbo petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Exhaust centre section split when 15 months old, but replaced under warranty.

Scrubs inner edge off front tyres long before rest of tyre is worn, but this is apparently normal for the steering geometry!?

General Comments:

The V rated Bridgestone tyres supplied by Nissan are good but too soft. Equivalent Dunlops make the handling too nervous. I finally switched to the Z rated Bridgestones which have all the characteristics of the original V rated set, but they last twice as long!

Replace the standard air filter with a K&N unit for better response. Fit some soundproofing felt around the boot and rear wheel arches - the reduction in road noise is brilliant.

I love it's understated styling, and it's rarity value and sheer grunt, but depreciation is going to be horrendous (70% in 3 yrs).

1997 Nissan 200SX Touring 2.0 turbo from UK and Ireland

Faults:

31K miles in 8 months and nothing but routine servicing + 1 pair of brake pads (£100) and unexplaing thuds at rear in first few months which disappeared of their own accord.

General Comments:

Thrash it when cold and the turbo makes a very nasty noise - I suspect the bearings are dry for the first few miles, so keep the revs low for the first few miles.

Dealers don't really know the car - e.g. they insist on trying to service it at 9000 mile intervals, not 6000 miles. However, standard service prices are the same as a Primera, and half the price of any BMW dealer.

Insurance not too bad, tyres dead after 15000 miles.
