1999 Perodua Kembara GX 1.3 from Singapore

Summary:

A reliable and value for money car

Faults:

Not much problem except for the back seat harness & the brakes.

General Comments:

Surprised with its handling - confident with most road conditions & curves.

A good 4x4 car to start with - comfort, space & economy for 2 passenger. Gets you to most places except for serious offroad locations.

1999 Perodua Kembara EZ 1.3 EFi petrol from Malaysia

Summary:

Hate Proton since the Kembara arrived

Faults:

Absolutely nothing wrong with it! One & half years old, trouble free motoring ever since. It has covered 65,000km with one battery replaced, and now it needs new 4 tyres & the idling speed reset.

General Comments:

When it was launched in 1998, there were comments like: underpowered 1300cc engine, looks like it will roll over any time & high fuel consumption. Of course these comments are from people who have never driven a 4X4 before. I have driven many 4X4's before but nothing comes close to the Kembara in its price/size segment!

A permanent 4X4 with lots of traction, high stability and safety. It sticks to the road like glue and has a high cornering limit although body roll can scare oncoming traffic! Good steering feedback (informs you when exceed its capability).

It can do 145km/h but the speed will drop at a fast rate on a hill pass (YES! It's underpowered). Drive on back roads to feel the power and exploit its ability (and enjoy it too!).
