1998 Peugeot 406 DLX 2.0 petrol from Malaysia

Faults:

Stalled in traffic when temp. got above 90C. Problem surfaced at 40000km. Took authorised service agent 9 months to identify actual cause. Replaced 'double relay' under warranty.

Knocking sounds from rear suspension also at 40000km, rectified by re-torquing nuts.

Both cooling fans replaced due to failure, one at 56000km and the other at 64000km.

General Comments:

Excellent car from Peugeot. Performance a little poor compared to other cars in class. Comfort and roadholding on par with better makes. Overall reliability marred by poor CKD assembly quality and below average service by authorised service agent in country.

1998 Peugeot 406 LX 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing serious although it is not the best starter in the world. I have had starting problems on several occasions, usually when the engine is hot.

Other than that it runs superbly well and is a great car to drive.

General Comments:

A wee bit heavy on petrol especially when the air conditioning is in use.

Although it is big, the power steering makes it an easy car to drive and park even in confined spaces.

Overall an excellent car.

1998 Peugeot 406 GLX Estate 2.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Rear brakes locking, handbrake seized.

Wiper blades split after only 9000 miles (7 months).

General Comments:

I have owned 4 other cars in the last two years including a Volvo 850 T5, and I find the 406 to be far more comfortable and a better drive if you can live without the performance.

1998 Peugeot 406 V6 3.0 V6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Quick. Deceptively quick. Family car with serious grunt. Catches other drivers off-guard.

Drivers seat-back is too low - shoulders feel unsupported. Lumbar support is ineffective.

Dare to take it above 3500rpm and it drinks petrol faster than you can say "fill 'er up".

Unstable at extreme speeds (+110mph). Brakes do not match the performance of the car - scary when you need them most.

First gear is too short and accelerator is too light. Has difficulty in putting the power down from a standing start. Expect front tyre replacements early.

Difficult (!) to keep to 30mph speed limits. Car wants to go faster.

Don't put any other keys on the same keyring as your car key. Why? When the key is in the ignition, the other keys will be banging off your knee.

Alloy wheels are difficult to keep clean .

Very comfortable, very quiet and excellent for long journeys. Lots of toys. Climate control is excellent. Loads of room in the back. Quite entertaining to drive.

Well what a polite gentleman he was (!)

Anyway a V6 engine will go on forever, whereas most turbo'd lumps burn out unless carefully looked after.

I've just purchased a 406 V6 on a 98 plate and I consider it to be the best V6 I have driven for years. I knocks the socks off silly little Calibras (even the turbo). Just come back from a trip to Germany and managed an astonishing 155mph. No standard Vaux can keep up with that well not the turbo Calibra I traded in for it!!!

1998 Peugeot 406 LX Aircon 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

No faults.

General Comments:

20,000 miles in its first year and only been back to the dealers for routine servicing. Excellent ride comfort, enough goodies to keep you happy and average 44MPG (including caravan towing).

I've had a lot worse for the money!

1998 Peugeot 406 2.0 petrol from Serbia

Faults:

Nothing, reliable, tough and extremely good looking.

General Comments:

After having a Renault, I promised myself never to buy a French car again. It was a disaster on wheels. But this newcomer threw me out of my chair. It is good looking, comfortable and I feel safe while driving it. I must say it has changed my opinion of French cars, at least of Peugeot.

1998 Peugeot 406 LX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Air conditioning unit broke down. After hours of labour spent on the car it eventually turned out to be a diesel potentiometer which was faulty. Apart from that everything else has been great.

General Comments:

Best car I ever invested in.

1998 Peugeot 406 Coupe SE 3.0 V6 24v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Stereo volume turns itself up.

Clock LED's blown.

Memory seats occasionally forget.

General Comments:

Superb car. The comfort far outways the slightly poor performance for its engine size - built more for touring than hairing about.
