1992 Peugeot 605 SVE 2.9 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great to drive and comfortable, but could have been a bit better built

Faults:

Ignition failed at 41,000 miles.

Passenger side window motor failed at 47,000 miles.

Power steering failed at 54,000 miles.

Stereo failed at 56,000 miles.

Interior trim was very flimsy and breakable.

General Comments:

The 605's quality was slightly disappointing.

But it did have many good points.

The interior was very spacious and comfortable.

The 2900cc V6 engine gave strong performance - although it did have a cost in the form of costly fuel bills.

The chassis gave superb handling to match the excellent engine.

Value for money was good - £13,000 for a two year old luxury sedan.

Kept it for two years before selling it on for £7,500.

1992 Peugeot 605 SV 3.0 from Syria

Summary:

You are very lucky if you buy such a car!

Faults:

Nothing serious or worthy to be mentioned happened.

General Comments:

It is really very comfortable car with reasonable cost of running and maintenance. Just pay attention to your gearbox because it is very expensive. For example it costs more than $1100, if found.

Very successful rear suspension, good Peugeot. I once, cut a 120 d angle at 110 km/pa without sliding. No over or under steering. I usually use very wide tires (Firestone 225/60/15), which gives it extra handling on slippy and fast roads.

The electronics are very sensitive, so make sure to use original spare parts.

Automatic gearbox in Lebanon, 250$ used. I changed it 3 years ago, and it works good, but I need to change the oil for the gearbox 2 times a year.

1992 Peugeot 605 SVE 3.0 V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Criminally overlooked

Faults:

Nothing as yet!

General Comments:

Incredibly comfortable company director's type of car.

Scorching pace, decent handling and reasonable fuel economy.

Belive it or not I paid £200 (no MOT), from a Peugeot dealer who had it hanging around looking sorry for itself.

Loads of kit as standard including leather and electric everything. Full history too!

Group 16 insurance rather hefy, but at 23 years of age I can expect little else!

1992 Peugeot 605 SVE 3.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

This is a seriously underrated car and a great bargain!!

Faults:

Nothing really, When I got it the electric sun roof was sticky so I disconnected it, and the air con didn't work (I had it charged and it works fine). The cruise control and computer are intermittent so a new ECU will be fitted in time.

General Comments:

This car cost me about £1500 GBP! It looks great, is very powerful, comfortable, roomy, well-equipped and reliable. Recently My family completed a 970 mile round trip to Cornwall and, including urban journeys, the car returned over 29mpg. On the long haul legs, cruising at an average of 70mph it returned over 34mpg. This is a seriously underrated car and a great bargain!!

1992 Peugeot 605 Svi V6 3.0 Litre V6 from Brunei

Summary:

A swift and handsome magnet

Faults:

Head gasket blew after bought the car though the car had sat for a year without being turned over.

Power steering controller gone.

Air con compressor died after a year.

Gear linkage worn; slipped out during fast gear changing.

Had to replace clutch.

General Comments:

As only paid $5000 for the car feel that

I got a powerful, handsome, luxury bargain.

Still turns heads even though it's getting on a bit now (eleven years old).

Seriously fast car when you feel the need for speed and without one of the back boxes (silencers) sounds very fruity too.

It handles at speed very responsively for such a large car though feel the brakes could do with being beefed up as stopping distances leave a lot to be desired.

1992 Peugeot 605 SLDT 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cross between an army tank, a luxury hotel and a great white shark

Faults:

New ignition barrel fitted recently.

Fuel pump needed reconditioning at 158,000 miles.

Power steering pump replaced at 157,000 miles.

Gear lever stick broke at 135,000 miles..... easily repaired.

Electric sunroof was faulty when purchased..... I suspect this was due to abuse by a previous owner.

Minor electrical faults from time to time.... very easily repaired.

General Comments:

A superlative car to drive in terms of performance, comfort & superglue-like roadholding.

Also very safe... I have actually driven away from a potentially nasty accident. A very unfortunate 4x4 owner can testify to this car's tank-like resilience!

Very cheap to run, a real miser with diesel considering its great size. One of the most underrated cars ever, due I suspect to the absence of a German prestige badge!!

There are faults, mainly due to the miles of electrical wiring. The fuel pump & the ignition barrel were the most expensive items, but at this age, such a great car can be forgiven a few ailments.

Totally true. A totally underrated car. Excellent review.

1992 Peugeot 605 SRDT 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The most underated car of its time!

Faults:

This car is an electrical nightmare, you name it it's gone wrong!

Turbo pipes (flexible) came to early demise, door locks also poor.

General Comments:

Peugeot spares for this 605 are very expensive.

However, with all its faults I love to drive the car. I hope others don't suffer the same electrical problems.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a repair manual?

Ask a Pug garage for their manual, at a small price they will let you have a copy of the car's complete systems.

1992 Peugeot 605 SRDT 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Small hose sprung a leak, replaced for £20.

Piece of plastic seat trim broke off, at 100,000 miles.

New front brake discs, piece of exhaust.

At this age and mileage things are bound to wear out.

General Comments:

Bought at 58,000 miles, now done 113,000, had the car three years, absolutely superb. I get it serviced at a garage specialising in commercial vehicles, not a Peugeot dealer.

Very pleased with it

Update on my previous review.

I gave the Peugeot to my son about a year ago. It has now done 170,000 miles. A couple of big bills last year, a new clutch (its first not bad for a car used for towing a caravan) and a heater matrix £500 ouch!. Poor design meant all of dashboard had to come out. Car still feels that it has lots of life left in it.
