1998 Plymouth Neon Highline Coupe SOHC from North America

Summary:

Much power, but seriously flawed

Faults:

I replaced the head gasket at 85000 miles at a cost of over eight hundred dollars.

The trunk leaked horribly.

The windows never sealed correctly, which made the interior sound louder than a freight train.

When I accelerated around a sharp corner, the suspension sounded as though it might give way to the asphalt surrounding me.

General Comments:

This car had a lot of power, but the repair costs were not worth it.

1998 Plymouth Neon EX DOHC from North America

Summary:

Would buy it again :)

Faults:

In this car the door frame does not surround the window. This has lead to windows shifting and a lot of wind noise when driving.

As well the car seems to be a target for break ins as the windows are easily pulled away from the car, to get something inside to open the doors.

The mechanism in place to keep the large doors from closing makes a loud cracking noise when opened and closed.

The trunk gets very moist - although I haven't figured out where the leak is occuring.

General Comments:

I love this car! Despite it's faults. It has been extremely dependable.

Being a 5-speed with DOHC the car has lots of pep - fun to drive, and extremely economical when it comes to fuel consumption.

Being a second hand car, I'm happily surprised to, as of yet, had no problems!

The fan squeaks really loud when I have the air or defrost on.

Sometimes when I roll up the window it makes a high pitched sound.

1998 Plymouth Neon Expresso from North America

Summary:

Feel like I can't go anywhere without calling a tow truck

Faults:

Two months after I owned the car, my fan relay went the part was $80.00.

My starter sticks and it squeals and diesels. I replaced it and three weeks later lost my new starter.

I have had to replace the battery cables and wiring and put in a new starter.

I paid 1500.00 for my neon and have put in a 1000.00 worth of work in the five months I have owned it.

I feel the neon is a cute car, but very unreliable. I know two other people who own neons and have had nothing but trouble with them.

Frequently my neon breaks down I have a very hard time finding parts in stock for it, I frequently have to wait two or three days for the part to come in.

Lets just keep things in perspective here. You bought a Plymouth, not a Chrysler. The Neon is widely known as one of the worst cars ever built, but it is also one of the most affordable cars in the US, so you get what you pay for. Don't let the experience sour you from eventually stepping up to a Chrysler, the Neon and the 300 are two completely different animals.

By your logic, someone who had a bad experience with their Ford Pinto would be justified in boycotting Jaguar and Volvo.

1998 Plymouth Neon Expresso 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Not worth a nickle

Faults:

My neon has been nothing but an extremely large headache. It only took about 3 years before it went to junk. It has 3 cracks in the head. But problems started way before that. I had a coil go out which fried the main computer and it took the dealership multiple weeks to fix. I don't see how anyone could think this is a good car. But wait a few more years, the head gasket will go sometime, or the head in general. To all of you brave enough to buy one, good luck, but I wouldn't do it.
