1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTX from North America - Comments

"The next best thing to a V8!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The day drove the car off the dealer's lot, the check engine light turned on. The catalytic converter went bad, but it was still under the manufacturer's warranty (till 80,000mi).

The driver's side window grinds while going up and down. Sometimes I need to pull it up because it won't make it on its own.

The exterior temperature on the climate control is barely ever right. It usually reads about 30 degrees, even it's 100 degrees outside.

General comments?

The minor gripes about this car are no match for my list of compliments!

It has the SLP (Street Legal Performance) GTX package, which includes 17" chrome wheels, stainless steel exaust, ram air hood, cold air intake, GTX badges, and GTX floor mats. It isn't really much faster than a GTP, but it looks very cool!

I have no other modifications to the car right now, and it beat my 1989 IROC-Z Camaro with a 350 (which was close), and it blew my buddy's 1992 Mustang GT away like nothing!

I have as good as 34 miles per gallon on a 100 mile trip going 55 miles per hour on a calm day.

It also handles very well for a stock car with 74,000 miles.

My last car was a 2 door 1997 Grand Prix GT, which was great, but this car was well worth the trade!

The GTX has Ram Air in ADDITION to the supercharged 3800 used in the GTP. A better question would have been; Why would you think Pontiac & SLP would work together on the GTP just to add new wheels, a couple badges and a cold air hood just to remove the Eaton blower from the options list on a car that's supposed to be an improvement on the GTP?? Did we forget our coffee today??

I think we did. The GTX is a special add-on package for SE, GT, and GTPs. The base GTX includes the functional composite hood with ram air induction, GTX nameplates, and key fobs.

My question is where's the best place to get a ram air hood for my gtp and isn't the cold air intake just part of the ram air, so they're not just holes/ nostrils in the hood?

Just a follow-up comment from the original writer. The base GTX package can be had on the SE, GT, and GTP models with equipment that another writer stated. My car started life as a GTP, then was sent to SLP to be converted to a GTX when new, then was fitted with the SLP options I listed. Since my original listing, I have added a 3.4" supercharger pulley and a reprogrammed PCM. A G-tech pro gives me consistent 14.8/14.9 second 1/4's. I also fix the window issue and outside thermometer for around $450.

How did you fix the window problem? Mine also takes forever to slide up.

I just saw a GTX, and looked it up- it looks awesome and sounds like it's got a huge engine in there - then I read it does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds and handles no better than the base grand prix. Say it ain't so! Now I read that the windows don't work well either. Please tell me why it's so great again? I'm saving my money for a GTO- At least that will beat my neighbor's old V-6 accord (and almost everything else) off the line.

GTX was merely a small "step up" from the other trim levels, including GTP... Hands down, it looks cooler, could be made to be a few seconds faster, surely, and most importantly: LIMITED EDITION. Not just a "China Zone" decal kit, but to collectors, VERY LIMITED. If you can get your hands on one, do it. To the right person, it's very collectible and worth some money (and obviously a premium above retail).

I custom ordered my white '99 GTP in May of '98 (cloth seats - Leather seats in Chicago just aren't fun). Thanks to the strike at GM, I didn't get it until October. I was a tier-1 supplier at the time, so I got it 4% over dealer cost, and got a nice deal from SLP for the GTX package. Basically, it was an extra $1,500 for 20 HP, but it looked fugginawesome!

I put 90,000 miles on that car before I sold it in 2004, right before the extended warranty ran out. If I had time to fix my own ride, I'd have kept it. Heck, I probably would have added the pulley kit and bought some slicks, while I was at it. I *LOVED* that car!

I got a decent trade-in for it, and bought a used 2001 Acura CL Type-S, which was another fun car. The thing that bugged me most about the Acura was that the GTX had so many more cool, hi-tech gizmos, even though it was 2 years older. It'd be so cool if Acura built a car with a HUD!
