My parents just purchased a 2001 2 door Pontiac Sunfire SE as a graduation gift for me. the car is simply wonderful, and I love it greatly. The sound system is great, and there is no weird noises coming from anywhere. We had it checked by a mechanic who is a good friend of the family, and he says that it is in completely awesome condition. I love my Sunfire, and the color is beautiful as well.. (dark shiny blue) this is my first car, and so far it shows and claims to be very reliable.

I purchased my 2001 Sunfire 2 years ago. It had 29,000 miles on it and it now has 64,000. The main problems I have had is I have replaced the rotors, starter, alternator, thermostat and the temperature sensor. Now after all that, the car still is not right. I have had a lot of problems as you can tell and I am not very happy with this vehicle. A lot has been replaced in the 2 years I have owned it.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire. I bought it brand new in 2001.

In the first year, I had it in the shop for problems with starting and the check engine light. They replaced the O2 sensor 3 times.

They had replaced the disk in the struts, because it was making a horrible sound when turning.

I have had problems with the windows rolling up and down. The trim around the doors is now coming off, and water leaks down in the door; the speakers won't work when it is raining, because they are wet, and the windows won't work when it is raining.

The fuel pump went out at 30,000 miles.

I have had problems since I bought it, and continue to have problems. The car is not worth the money I paid.

I just purchased a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire 4 door sedan, it is a stylish dark blue. I fell in love with this car the first time a saw it, even though it is four doors it still looks so sporty! However they day after I bought it, the thermostat went out! From what I have discovered since buying it, this is a common problem for cavaliers from 1999- at least 2001s and because these cars are similar... I would assume its the same for both, I know three cavalier owners and all have had the same problem at around 50,000 miles. So if your sunfire is approaching that many miles watch out for this, it takes about 1 hour to change and is VERY cheap, but EXTREMELY important! Other than this problem and the fact of the front end having lots of nicks from the low front end getting pegged with gravel this car is amazing, good style, good ride and I think the car has a great ride, however compared to a camaro z-28 the power lacks a little.. but gas mileage is WONDERFUL!!

I also have loud noise in lower right wheel I believe. Its so loud sounds like an airplane.. Could it be my bearing?

Also we bought extended warranty it was pointless, we had to fix the windshield washer fluid box and they said its wear and tear, the brakes needed to be fixed wear and tear, few others things busted in the motor which I was sure was default, but the dealer kept blamming it on wear and tear. Once the garuntee was over.. problems started.

-side window the motor broke so now the window cannot be used, have to buy a new motor for the window costing 700$

-the mirror outside electric problems works time to time.

-car is very very loud, you can hear all the wind and motor when driving.

-The battery went dead at about 140 000km one day and the car just laid in the middle of the street shut down with engine light on

-GM have serious issues, they screwed us with the extra warranty we paid 3000$ for, it served no use, they kept blamming all on wear and tear.

-Though the car is not had major problems, the little problems have added up to be so much..

We had to change the back light bulb maybe 10 times, there was a problem with the electronics.

I bought my 2001 Sunfire the year it came out, and have racked up 100,000 miles on it!! I suppose for that many miles the problems could be worse... however most of mine occured within 2 years of owning it! The first thing to be replaced was brake pads... after a year. Next came my engine light. Theres faulty computer chip in my car... so for 5 years my check engine light has always been on. The lights on the dash and radio dimmed about 4 years ago... and my back speaker has a loose wire so it sometimes works, most of the time doesn't. The CD player does not work if it it to hot or to cold. The transmission also acts weird in extreme heat... everyone that has looked at it can't figure that one out. The cables to my battery corroded 3 years ago. The most expensive things have been my struts went out, and the fuel injection system has had to be replaced 3 times, however I think that is due to the automotive place that put the first one in. But the car has driven me all over the place, and if I can adjust to the minor annoyances, overall I would have to say it has been a decent car. I'll report back in another 100,000 miles!!
