1998 Renault Scenic RT 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Who needs anything else?

Faults:

Rattling exhaust (seems very common).

Intermittent oil level readings.

General Comments:

Terrific family car.

Only bitches are lack of power and too soft rear suspension. Both are fixed on latest models.

I've recently driven Fiat Multipla (too ugly, too wide), Vauxhall Zafria (very disappointing - it's a 7 seat estate, not really a mini-MPV), Citroen Picasso and Mazda Premacy (both poor copies of the Scenic) and am about to order a new Scenic 2.0 RXE from Holland at £4500 under UK price!

Follow up:-

I bought the 2.0 RXE but from a UK (Dundee) dealer who almost matched the import.

Better in most respects than the old one.

Note: The driver's seat split on the old one just before I sold it - seems to be a common problem on ones this age.

I just tested many midi MPV competitors and I must disagree with the comment that the Premacy & Picasso are poor copies of the Scenic.

The Premacy to me felt like a Focus Estate with a bit more headroom, while, I have to say to an independent the Picasso is a great improvement and refinement over the Scenic.

The Picasso drives better and is more practical and usable than the Scenic, although the looks aren't for everyone.

The Scenic needs an upgrade as its competitors are overtaking it.

The Almera Tino was almost as practical as the Picasso, and better built, but had a strange, unliveable interior IMO.

I still haven't decided what to buy. Price will probably be the final motivator.

1998 Renault Scenic RT 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An excellent car for travelling in

Faults:

Needed a back box after only 2 years but it is low mileage so perhaps should not be too surprised. Other than that nothing.

General Comments:

So far the car has been excellent. The handling - especially in high winds is well, interesting and on roundabouts also,is eventful - but you cannot have everything.

It's comfortable and practical.

I bought the car fron a VW dealer and it's to them I refer with my dealer score. I can honestly say the Dane Motor Company in Wrexham - North Wales have been rubbish and I would tell anybody who would listen - don't touch them with the proverbial stick. Other than that a superb car.

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Excellent family car, only fault I can find is that from my driving position the little pictures on the dashboard that light up, i.e when you turn on the lights etc, are not visible.

Faults:

Sell your Scenics before they get to 60,000 miles, they spend more time in the dealer than outside.

My company over the last 2 years has bought around 30 of these for computer engineers that travel the country, now the fleet manager has recalled them all and we are getting new cars of a different type because they are costing too much money.

General Comments:

I think the new style has been improved.

Very good car, apart from the driving position and petrol consumption.

1998 Renault Scenic RT 1.6e from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Exhaust heatshield has worked its way loose, causing excessive vibration, FOUR times in my 18 months (22,000 miles) of ownership - each time after driving through standing water as a result of prolonged heavy rain. Each time it's been dealt with promptly by the dealer (while-u-wait), but I can't help thinking this is some kind of design glitch - I've never experienced this problem on any other car.

General Comments:

Generally speaking, I'm very happy. Performance and economy are good. I like the upright seating position, which releases lots of legroom front and rear, and there's lots of headroom too (I'm 6'3"). Lots of storage space helps to keep things tidy and plenty of boot space.

Faults:

Oil leak 2 weeks after picking up car.

Gearbox very tight and crunches in reverse.

Petrol leak.

Whistling from wing mirrors at speed.

Windscreen washers packed up.

Front passenger head rest broke.

General Comments:

Design of car brilliant, shame about after sales service from Renault, hopefully they will sort out my gearbox problems this time.

Despite all the things I have had go wrong with the car, I would not be put off buying another one.

I have bought a 2nd hand Scenic Megane from a Renault dealer and my gears crunch when going into reverse. I have complained to the dealer who has replaced the clutch twice and had the gearbox checked by a specialist and Renault themselves, the response

"Your Scenic is performing correctly as per manufacturer guidelines when reverse gear is selected appropriately. Operator methods may affect the smoothness of this selection"

Yet their head mechanic has done this also the service manager!!!

Also the brakes groan when you press the brake pedal when the car is stationary, these have been stripped and cleaned several times all TNA

Anyone else with a similar problem.

Darren.
