1998 Subaru Forester GX 2.0L 4 cylinder from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Overall a great, practical, safe, reliable, fun car

Faults:

The only problem I've had was a flat tyre. Apart from that, it hasn't missed a beat in the 6 months I've had it.

General Comments:

As a 17 year old boy looking for a car, I had expected to find myself in a Celica or Impreza, or something cool and sporty. Instead, I ended up in a SUV, and wasn't particularly excited about it. But in the last few months, I've started to love this car.

It corners better than any other car I've driven. Same chassis as an Impreza, an excellent all-wheel-drive system; I've thrown it into some fast and sharp corners, and it's never let go. A little tall, and the suspension is a bit soft, so any real sports car will obviously beat it, but beautiful handling, with nice, light steering.

Very practical interior, with huge cargo capacity with the rear seats folded down. I've thrown two mountain bikes in the back, without taking the wheels off, quite easily. Also, more compartments than you've ever seen in a car.

The only thing about the car I don't like is the 2.0L engine - it's really too small for the size of the car. If you have the option, go for the turbo version. I know I'll be putting a turbo on mine as soon as I'm off my P plates. There is virtually no headroom for overtaking, sitting on 3k revs in 5th at 100kmph.

Petrol consumption is quite high too, mainly thanks to the all wheel drive, but the amount of revs needed to get the car moving doesn't help either - another problem that would be fixed with a turbo.

1998 Subaru Forester GLS AWP 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great all round car that never lets you down

Faults:

Speedo sensor (150 euro), back up (reversing) switch (30 euro) at around 110k, and a new cat at 120k. The cat cost 200 euro on eBay.

Replaced drop links over the last year cost 80 euro.

General Comments:

This car is a great all rounder, it tows a trailer with no problem.

There is good room in the back for lugging around stuff.

It never stops, very very reliable. It's one of the best jeeps I have driven in snow, with its constant 4 wheel drive system.

It does 25 mpg.

1998 Subaru Forester from North America

Summary:

Good value

Faults:

Head gasket.

General Comments:

I think I have caught the Subaru head gasket disease. My car was fine all summer in Tucson, Arizona, and last night tried to overheat after 5 hours of driving in 40-degree (F) weather. But anyhow, it's got 289,000 miles on it, so it doesn't owe me anything. It's just weird having a car that only overheats in the winter.

1998 Subaru Forester S from North America

Summary:

OK

Faults:

I am not sure yet..

Park lights stay on after the car is shut off.

Clank of the engine after it goes out of first.

Soft brakes.

No extras that I am used to in a car in general.

I am scared to know, but have heard good things about the Subaru and wanted this one to be as good as others I have heard...

General Comments:

I love the look of the car, but am at a cross-roads to whether to keep this car today and go on, or I took in the car to the dealership to have these problems looked at, since I only bought it yesterday, and the car they gave me to test drive is a Infiniti I30 T 2000 year model..

I have a dilemma, which one should I go for.. I have the loyalty of the Subaru being well built and reliable.. but have heard less than fair reviews on the Infinti... what would you do?

When I got my '98 Forester, I also thought the brakes felt soft, compared to other cars. It just took a couple of days to get used to it though, and it's never been a problem.
