1996 Suzuki Baleno GLX Sedan 1.6 16v petrol from Portugal

Summary:

Economical and reliable

Faults:

Besides the initial... renewal of all belts, water pump, plugs, filters.

Just had a catalytic converter.

Soon will replace suspension tie rods, rubber bushes etc on the front axle.

Got all parts already for around 100 euros.

General Comments:

I bought the car as a temporary drive to last me a year or so... I have been quite surprised with its reliability and low cost of running. Going to the second year and have done around 25.000km with no issues.

Mine being a 1.6 is not that slow (although not a performer), but is OK on overtaking etc.

On motorways it's OK doing 120-140km/h with ease... consumption at those speeds is still OK at 6.2 - 6.4. In town it goes to 7 ish, and goes to 5.6 on the normal roads at 90km/h.

The main disadvantage I see are the seats... they are very low . Parking right next to a curb is quite hard to get out of. And it's uncomfortable on long trips.

I will keep it for as long as it runs, as it is very economical and parts are cheap.

1996 Suzuki Baleno LX 1.3 from Denmark

Summary:

Cheap feel and short lasting

Faults:

Rust, rust and rust. It felt very cheap. It was loud to drive. It felt older than cars of the same age. Things broke and fell off. The hood spring broke.

I however loved it for the short period of I had it. But I will never buy a Suzuki again.

General Comments:

Ugly, slow, kind of roomy though.

You can't reasonably expect a 17 year old cheap production car to last even as long as it did!

Was going to say the same thing. Sounds like the reviewer got a good deal if he got the car cheap, and at 17 years old, it certainly has out-lasted the average car which has usually only an 11 - 12 year life span.

1996 Suzuki Baleno GL 1.6 G16 16v from North America

Summary:

Very good from new

Faults:

Water pump at 200000 kilometers

General Comments:

This has been a very dependable car. It is not fast 0 to 100kph in 15 seconds. The car is not quiet. Auto gearbox uses a lot of engine power. A/C is very cold. Tiny 13 inch wheels too small for car. Paint still shines 9 years from new.

1996 Suzuki Baleno GTX Hatch 1.8 DOHC, fuel injection from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A great looking and driving performance hatch, but beware gearbox troubles

Faults:

Basically nothing went wrong in the one year I owned the car, although at times the engine seemed to nearly drop out when idling, particularly if coasting with clutch in or after pulling up suddenly.

Also I think the gearbox may be a weakness at around 60-70 thousand k's, as when I went to sell the car to a dealer, an inspection revealed leaks "from one end of the gearbox to the other." It was going to require major work to fix (or so they said)

General Comments:

I love this car. It was a nice sporty looking hatch, but not too overdone, with after-market 16" alloys & 205/45R16 tyres and the tame factory body kit (rear spoiler, skirts, front and rear under spoilers) doing the trick.

The seats were sporty yet comfy enough, but not on the really long trips. Very reliable and never looked like needing attention, though as I say it may have run into big problems had I kept it much longer.

I should have replaced the shocks to get a better ride which was a little rough, but I don't mind that in small cars.

The clutch was very nice and responsive with a very short shift esp. for a non-specialized sports car. 1st gear has impressive torque and acceleration was great, though gear changes a little jerky, but this you expect when moving fast through the gears.

Red line/cut-out at approx 7'200, but I wouldn't recommend making a habit of this. The engine makes a lovely whining sound as it climbs through 4,5,6 K, gaining power all the way and never sounding out of breath or wanting to give it up... attacks the red line and I swear it wants to break through it, but of course the cut-out is in place.

Lastly, some great features were the anti-lock brakes, twin airbags, power windows, steering, mirrors, a very easy car to get about town in, with great rear visibility and small in size... yet the 1.8 Double Overhead Cam injection engine gives the car more punch and HP than other similar hatches, example: mirage, starlet (non-turbo), charade, etc. which generally have 1.3 or 1.5 engines at best.

Methinks that the buying dealer was making up stories about the gearbox to drop the price he paid. When you buy a car, it's the greatest thing on wheels. Take it back two hours later and it's the worst, so they can't give you anything! My brother and I have had zero gearbox issues/comments with ours - mine is a 1995, his is a 2000 model.

1996 Suzuki Baleno Estate GLX 1.6 16v from Netherlands

Summary:

Just a great small station-wagon !!

Faults:

Nothing really.

General Comments:

It's a well equipped car for it's money.

I'm very fond of the rear of the car, it's a very different than other Japanese cars.

The inner room of the car could be a little bit bigger.

1996 Suzuki Baleno 1.3 from Finland

Faults:

After 7000 km driving exhaust system began to resonate, when rpm was about 2500. Dealer repaired it (guarantee 3 years). Suspension is poor!

General Comments:

As a whole, I like the car. Fuel consumption is not so big, in longer trips even 5.5l/100km. Lights are OK and price is relatively low.
