1997 Tata Estate from India

Summary:

Dream car

Faults:

It takes on oil, otherwise it is the best car I have had.

General Comments:

It is the best car Tata motors have manufactured. I love driving in it. It's comfortable, and your life is secured in it with a speed of 100 too.

2005 Tata Estate GLX SW 1.4 std petrol from South Africa

Summary:

Pleasant to own and drive

Faults:

Front passenger upper door hinge BROKE after 3 years.

Repaired by TATA SOUTH AFRICA.

General Comments:

Good fuel economy 14.5 km/lt town and country (some times with full trailer).

The car is docile and safe. Definitely not a Ferrari eater.

1995 Tata Estate 2.0 from India

Summary:

Comfortable car for long rides

Faults:

The spares are hard to find and the electrical parts are not that good. But that's OK as I got the car at a low price.

General Comments:

I felt more safe in that car than any new car. It may surprise you that all the Tata cars have passed the crash test. While many manufacturers still struggle to pass the crash test, even with new cars.

It was and is an advanced car for its time.

1996 Tata Estate from India

Summary:

It's a good car

Faults:

Nothing went wrong. The car was in excellent condition, just a bit uncomfortable for long journeys.

General Comments:

Good vehicle for city driving.

1995 Tata Estate diesel from India

Summary:

Truly terrible

Faults:

Every electric window failed.

Radiator fell off at 15K KM.

Rear door lock never worked.

Front tyres scrubbed through every 12K KM.

General Comments:

This was a car body on a truck chassis.

Build and fit quality were appalling, every panel was a different colour and none of the doors closed properly.

The only reason to buy this car would be as a challenge.

At the time I bought there were only half a dozen (mid-size) models available. The Tata Estate seemed to be the least awful.

The Indian market is awash now with quality models. A Ford IKON will do most of what a Tata Estate can do, cheaply, comfortably and reliably.

If you need a truck, buy a truck.

I am using a Tata Estate 1995 and I am very happy with it... don't see a problem unless you maintain it from time to time. It's the safest car ever made by any Indian Car manufacturers and mind you if you crash in a truck at the speed of 80 kmh in any new car i.e. Ikon, zen, esteem, Honda etc, you will die on the spot, but a Tata Estate or a Sumo you are very safe.
